Live In Green
LIVE IN GREEN, is a Refugee-led and Not-for Profit Organization based in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement, Uganda, that advances sustainable development through integrated clean energy, waste recycling, and agroecology programs. The Clean Energy Initiatives include operating the Energy Resource and Waste Recovery Centre, which produces approximately five tons of biomass briquettes daily and over improved cookstoves annually. These interventions significantly reduce reliance on firewood and charcoal, contributing to forest conservation and improved respiratory health. Complementing these are innovative such as solar induction cookers and solar-powered refrigerators, introduced to enhance energy access for households and small enterprises. The Waste Recycling Program manages both organic and inorganic waste streams. Organic waste is carbonized to produce briquettes and compost manure, while plastics and e-waste are sorted, processed, and repurposed into value-added products for local markets. This initiative not only mitigates environmental pollution but also generates livelihoods for refugees and host communities. Under the Agroecology Program, LIVE IN GREEN operates one of the largest tree nurseries in refugee settlements, producing over seedlings annually to support afforestation, agroforestry, and land restoration. The organization promotes climate-smart agriculture by distributing improved seed varieties, fruit trees, and providing training in kitchen gardening, thereby strengthening food security and resilience to climate change.
