Bryum Gmbh
Bryum operates across the spectrum of urban landscape architecture and beyond. We develop alternative planning methods and broaden the boundaries of our discipline. We engage in everything from planning large-scale urban development, to designing objects down to the last details, and to temporarily filling the next street corner. We champion landscape-led approach to developing our cities and relish in leading the planning of our multi-layered everyday space. Bryum operates primarily within urban environments, between conceptual development and execution within the public domain. The office from Basel has been constantly evolving since its founding in 2008 by Daniel Baur and Michael Oser. It is named after the pioneer plant Silver moss (Bryum argentum), which occurs primarily on heavily utilized areas in urban landscapes. We address both the built and the unbuilt landscapes as testing grounds for advancing our ideas. The implementation of findings from our conceptual approaches in realized projects represents an important part of our work, which then feeds back into our further iterations and evolution as an office. We understand our work not only as the development of structural solutions, but also as careful mediation of interdisciplinary stakeholders with their unique needs, and ultimately as the creation of new visions. We engage in the active research of interdisciplinary approaches of development in the public sphere as a functional, every day and participatory space. Engaging with the evolving needs of the city from today and tomorrow, such as climate mitigation and equity in public space, we orient our operations towards the livability and vitality of our cities.
