Space benefits mankind through the services it provides to Earth. Future space activities progress thanks to space transfer and are safeguarded by space situation awareness. Natural orbit perturbations are responsible for the trajectory divergence from the nominal two-body problem, increasing the requirements for orbit control; whereas, in space situation awareness, they influence the orbit evolution of space debris that could cause hazard to operational spacecraft and near Earth objects that may intersect the Earth. However, this project proposes to leverage the dynamics of natural orbit perturbations to significantly reduce current extreme high mission cost and create new opportunities for space exploration and exploitation. The COMPASS project will bridge over the disciplines of orbital dynamics, dynamical systems theory, optimisation and space mission design by developing novel techniques for orbit manoeuvring by “surfing” through orbit perturbations. The use of semi-analytical techniques and tools of dynamical systems theory will lay the foundation for a new understanding of the dynamics of orbit perturbations. We will develop an optimiser that progressively explores the phase space and, though spacecraft parameters and propulsion manoeuvres, governs the effect of perturbations to reach the desired orbit. It is the ambition of COMPASS to radically change the current space mission design philosophy: from counteracting disturbances, to exploiting natural and artificial perturbations.

Scuola Militare Nunziatella - Nunziatella Military Academy
Founded in 1787, the "Nunziatella" Military Academy can be attended only by students who have completed two years of either humanistic or scientific high school. Admission is competitive, consisting of medical, psychological and athletic tests, followed by cultural examinations based on the subjects of the first two years of high school. Graduates of the Academy obtain the Italian baccalaureate with either a scientific or humanistic concentration, in addition to an academic formation in subjects aimed at pursuing a military career, such as military history, strategy and international affairs, and basic tactical training. Military activities carried out during the school year include "Weapons Theory and practice","Military Law", frequent sessions at the shooting range with individual and assault weapons and other disciplines with the same focus. At the end of each year, students also attend a boot camp with an active unit of the armed forces (most frequently the Alpine training center, in Aosta and the 186º "Folgore" Paratroopers Regiment, in Siena) in order to acquire practical elements of combat training, including: hand to hand combat, camouflage, survival, first-aid, aerial infiltration/exfiltration and NBC warfare (Nuclear, Biological and Chemical). The third component of the curriculum, in addition to academics and military training, is athletic. Each cadet receives training in horse-back riding, fencing and sailing, and must additionally enrol in either Swimming, Rowing, Track & Field, Boxing or Taekwondo. The Nunziatella is, the institution with the most wins at the inter-school Military Games, an interdisciplinary tournament between cadets of Italy's four military schools. The commander of the school (a colonel in the Italian Army) is also the dean of the institute. The recruitment of teachers is also competitive. After graduating, cadets are free to continue their education in the armed forces and serve as officers, or go back to civilian life.
