Trchnical College Of Mosul

Prior to the academic year 2001-2002 there were more than 35 technical institutes in Iraq awarding 2-year practical vocational diplomas [Technical Diploma] in different fields. The Baghdad-based Foundation of Technical Institutes, FTI, administered all these institutions. The FTI itself was under the jurisdiction of the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The Foundation of Technical Institutes was renamed in 2002 to the Foundation of Technical Education, FTE. This organization now controls both the remaining 27 technical institutes and the 9 newly established technical colleges. Some of the technical colleges were founded in the academic year of 2001-2002. Others used to be technical institutes that were upgraded to technical colleges (For example, the Technical College of Mosul used to be Technical Institute of Mosul prior to 2002.) These new technical colleges offer 4-year Bachelor’s degree programs (BA and BSc) and 2-year Master’s degree programs. Each of these colleges has several areas of specialization. For example, the Technical College of Mosul has five engineering departments. The Dept. of Computer Techniques and Engineering at the college is one of them and it awards the Degree of Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng) in Computer Technology. The main difference between courses taught at traditional universities and the new technical colleges is that the former are more theoretical, whereas the latter are less theoretical and more applied. This difference is especially evident in engineering courses. Despite these differences, though, graduates from Bachelor’s degree programs at technical colleges may pursue a Master’s degree at any traditional Iraqi university and are – like graduates from traditional universities – entitled to join the Iraqi Engineering Union as full members. University Of Baghdad College Of Pharmacy

The College of Pharmacy was established in 1936 due to the urgent need to prepare pharmacists and chemists with scientific and technical competence to carry out pharmaceutical services and chemical analyzes in Iraq, and it was occupying a temporary building attached to the Royal Hospital, and the first (12 students) graduated with a degree as a chemical pharmacist. In 1947-1948 a scientific branch was created in the college to study chemistry with a bachelor’s degree, and the college was officially called the Royal College of Pharmacy and Chemistry until 1958/1959, as the College of Pharmacy was attached to the to the University of Baghdad after it was affiliated with the Public Health Directorate in the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Social Affairs, then the Ministry of Health throughout the previous period. In 1959-1960, according to the academic degrees granted by the University of Baghdad, the certificate granted to graduates of the college became a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. In 1972-197, graduate studies were established in the college to study masters in four scientific fields: pharmaceutical chemistry, drugs and medicinal plants, toxicology, pharmacology and then, a doctoral study in pharmaceutical chemistry was established in 1975-1976. The college adopted the semester system for studying since 1979-1980. For keeping with the scientific and global development, the clinical laboratory sciences branch was founded in 1984, and the clinical pharmacy branch in 1993, thus the number of scientific branches in the college became six: pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutics, pharmacognosy and medicinal plants, pharmacology and toxicology, clinical laboratory sciences, and clinical pharmacy. Hawler Medical University

Hawler Medical University (HMU) is located in the city of Erbil (Hawler) in Iraqi Kurdistan Region. HMU has been established by the Council of Ministers of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government in July 2005 and endorsed by the Council of Ministers of Iraqi Federal Government in March 2006. The university has been established to include in itself the four colleges that were belonging to Salahaddin University in Erbil. The colleges are: College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, College of Pharmacy and College of Nursing. The overall aim of establishment of HMU is to improve the medical education in the region as well as to have a better management of the mentioned colleges. This does not mean that the colleges are newly established, but the management structure is new while the oldest college which is the College of Medicine was founded in 1977. Establishment of a university for medical group colleges is by itself the first experience in Iraq. HMU provides undergraduate and graduate studies in different medical and health sciences. The language of study in the four colleges is English.
