Through our programs and services, we endeavor to benefit all people and increase the community’s awareness, positive attitudes, and sensitivity towards their fellow citizens with disabilities. Between Friends is a charitable organization that creates opportunities for people with disabilities to connect, grow, and belong through social and recreational activities. Many people with disabilities seek social and recreational activities that are fundamental to enriching self-esteem, quality of life, and mental and physical health. Between Friends facilitates programs with these goals in mind while promoting a focus on shared interests over individual differences. Between Friends offers children, youth and adults a variety of programs during the leisure hours. Between Friends was originally established in 1970 as the, Pink Pelican Club, by a group of parents seeking social, recreational, and community based activities for their teenagers with disabilities. The Pink Pelican Club rapidly expanded as members were empowered to actively participate in the community through the provided social and recreational programs. In 1982, the organization obtained registered charitable status and a new name.

The Keewaydin Foundation provides camping experiences and challenges that help children achieve significant personal growth by living in a community, being independent and living simply in rustic and natural settings. Founded as a canoe tripping camp in the northern wilds of Maine in 1893, by A.S. Gregg Clarke, Keewaydin is among the oldest summer camps in North America. Today, the Keewaydin Foundation runs three summer camps, Keewaydin Dunmore in Vermont, Keewaydin Temagami in Ontario, and Songadeewin in Vermont. The Foundation also operates the Keewaydin Environmental Education Center in Vermont and Ojibway Family Lodge in Ontario.

Northern Tier National High Adventure Base
Northern Tier is the Boy Scouts of America’s gateway to adventure in the Great Northwoods! In the summer, Scouts from Northern Tier’s three wilderness canoe bases explore millions of acres of pristine lakes, meandering rivers, dense forests, and wetlands in Northern Minnesota, Northwest Ontario, and Northeast Manitoba. Northern Tier crews paddle in almost 6 million acres of exclusively canoe-access wilderness from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) of Minnesota to the Atikaki Provincial Park of Manitoba. Trips range in length from 6-14 days and usually include between 50-150 miles of wilderness travel. In the winter, Northern Tier is home to the Okpik Cold Weather Camping program, the BSA’s premier winter high adventure program. Fall trips are also available. All trips are fully outfitted and provisioned. A highly trained staff member, called an Interpreter, accompanies all crews on their trek. All participants must be age 14 by the time they arrive at Northern Tier OR have graduated from the 8th grade and be age 13 by the time they arrive. We are a Cooperator with the USDA Forest Service under the Superior National Forest. We issue permits into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. As a Cooperator with the Forest Service, we are an equal opportunity service-provider.
