Gene Learning Association
Our association was born from the intersection of our interests in the development of innovative diagnostic methods and in cancer treatments. Three of our members are recognized researchers who are developing a promising method of diagnosing cancer and other pathologies; other members have embraced this cause by the need to learn about different approaches to treating cancer and to share their knowledge with those who need it. Innovative research We developed a novel approach to gene expression analysis and training of diagnostic and prognostic human pathology models. First, it has to be noted that most of human pathologies affect expression of not just one but rather of many genes. Second, it is then easy to realize that disease might have an impact on many parts of entire gene network. Thus, instead of searching for the specific genes we used gene expression stoichiometries to develop diagnostic and prognostic models for human pathologies. In principle, our holistic approach results in the following key advantages: 1) Significant reduction in stoichiometry signatures models’ dimensionality. 2) Reduction in noise for stoichiometry signatures. As a result, reduced noise in feature space simplifies models training and improves their cross-validation accuracy. 3) Models trained on big data generated by high-throughput RNA-sequencing or microarrays technologies potentially can be transferred to low cost platforms, such as RT-PCR. 4) Last, but not least, our approach may uncover novel therapeutic targets based on analysis of stoichiometry changes in constituents of gene network. Information ressource Considering demographics and aging of human populations cancer is expected to remain as one of the leading mortality-causing disease. Thus, our community service will be to collect information and create an information ressource on innovative anti-cancer cures for those who need it.

Founded in 1938, the KOF Swiss Economic Institute of ETH Zurich is one of the oldest economic research institutes in Switzerland. It provides independent and competent contributions both to the discussion of economic policy in Switzerland and to international research. It considers itself an exchange platform for economists and drives forward its future-oriented research through national and international cooperation with science, institutions and industry. The Institute, which is affiliated at the ETH Department of Management, Technology and Economics (D-MTEC), supports various expert committees such as Econpol, an European research network. It also builds bridges between economics and the public, for example through regular events on topics relevant to economic policy. The Institute has its finger on the pulse of the economy. Its scientific work is based on company surveys of more than Swiss companies, which form the basis for many research projects and are indispensable for economic forecasts. However, the Institute's work has long gone far beyond economic research. The more than 70 employees of the KOF and the three affiliated chairs deal with questions on innovation, internationalisation, governmental framework conditions or the comparison of international education systems. In addition, the training of young scientists is of great importance. Currently, 27 doctoral students are employed at the KOF. The Institute is headed by Prof. Dr. Jan-Egbert Sturm and the Vice Directors Prof. Dr. Peter Egger and Prof. Dr. Marko Köthenbürger.

The Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA) is a leading platform for research and teaching of technology in architecture, in disciplines such as structural design, digital fabrication, energy and building systems, building processes and computation. The seven professorships and 200 members of ITA are involved in leading global research projects such as the Singapore-ETH Future Cities Lab, the EU Climate KIC and the Swiss Competence Center of Energy Research (SCCER). With four connected lab facilities, ITA features a globally unique experimental research infrastructure. The Robotic Fabrication Laboratory (RFL), the 3D Printing Lab, the Concrete Materials Lab and the Adaptive Building Systems Lab (to be completed in 2020) constitute a network of connected laboratories. They allow large-scale testing of building components and systems on a full scale, across multiple domains. To test for applicability under realistic conditions, ITA researchers frequently advance lab-based research to living labs outside of ETH, such as at the NEST living labs DFAB House and HiLo and the UWCSEA office living lab in Singapore. Living labs allow the transfer from research to innovative practice and involve leading industry partners from design, engineering and construction. Besides advancing knowledge by research in the respective fields, ITA focuses on educating the next generation of architects, building engineers and consultants.

The following missions guide the activities of MWS: Improvement of Medical Education MWS will host the World Congress of Melanoma (WCM) every four years, following the tradition since 1985. The World Congress of Melanoma is the largest congress in this field, combining scientific and clinical topics and bringing together scientists and clinicians. The next World Congress of Melanoma is planned for 2021 in Rome. MWS also organized educational meetings in South America and South Africa, regions in which few training courses on melanoma take place. Future meetings are in planning. Improvement of Guideline Development MWS intends to unify diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in melanoma / skin cancer worldwide. MWS will establish a MELANOMA / SKIN CANCER KNOWLEDGE DATABASE (MKD), which contains all relevant articles for evidence based medicine in melanoma / skin cancer, and additionally evidence tables for these articles. The MKD will be accessible for all national guideline-development groups. MWS will organize international expert meetings in order to develop recommendations for diagnosis and treatment of melanoma in the rapidly changing landscape. Improvement of Patient’s Access to New Treatments MWS intends to provide melanoma patients worldwide access to new and more efficacious treatments. MWS will address governments in order to achieve a more rapid reimbursement of new treatments. MWS will address pharmaceutical companies in order to achieve access to new treatment modalities in countries, where the high cost medications are not affordable. Improvement of Clinical Research in Melanoma MWS will coordinate clinical research activities in melanoma internationally. MWS will perform international clinical trials in indications, which are not being investigated by the pharmaceutical industry. MWS will support international expert meetings in order to coordinate clinical research. A special focus will be placed on patient-directed outcome research.

The GMA is a not for profit organisation set up in 2009 as an association in Switzerland active in Switzerland and Peru and with contacts in Ethiopia. The IWI-HSG exists since 1989 and is run as an independent entity. It has personnel and financial ties with the University of St.Gallen. It is predominantly self-financed from private research contracts. The postgraduate Executive Master of Business Engineering (EMBE HSG) is affiliated to the IWI-HSG, but is also run independently. The management of the IWI-HSG consists of Professors Back, Brenner (Chair), Jung, Leimeister and Winter. The Executive Committee consists of high-ranking company representatives and professors of the university. It monitors the content and financial development of the IWI-HSG. The operational management is in the hands of a managing director. As a link to business practice, the Research Council of the IWI-HSG influences the scientific guidelines and the orientation of the research contents of the IWI-HSG.

Their research allows Switzerland to take a leading position within the global field of digital fabrication. The NCCR Digital Fabrication is the first NCCR focused on architecture and construction funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). Initiated at ETH Zurich, it is partnered with EPF Lausanne, Empa and the Berne University of Applied Sciences. NCCRs are cross-disciplinary research networks funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
