Metis Institute For Climate Strategy
Our research mission is to help create techniques for analysing climate risk and to help shape the global regulatory environment on climate-related disclosures. Our findings are delivered through high-level reports that aim to inform local and global debates on the future of climate finance and carbon accounting. The first phase of our work will focus on three areas: 1. Corporate climate strategy: The widespread implementation of recommendations from the Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) is a strong step forward in encouraging industry leaders to get serious about climate risk, but it can be difficult for businesses to know where to begin. We’re here to provide clarity and to conduct the research needed to advance best practice. ESG Auditing: There is considerable scepticism over the accuracy, reliability and materiality of ESG reporting. This is not surprising considering the nascent state of ESG and lack of standardization. Yet the next few years are going to see a burgeoning demand for ESG audits that approach the level of assurance expected of financial information. Research into the challenges and avenues forward is critical at this juncture, and should prove invaluable across the four CSE pillars as their service lines develop. The water-carbon nexus: Climate change means a shifting water system. This will have far-reaching effects, including sea-level rise and altered precipitation levels. At the same time, TCFD analysis is starting to show companies the water-related impacts that climate change will have on their business model. But we are in the early stages and understanding of these risks is limited. So the core aim of this research theme is to develop frameworks that help businesses analyse and act on the water-related risks of climate change.

Through the research our scholars undertake and the events we organise, we seek to create and share knowledge, to engage stakeholders in an exchange of ideas, and to enhance the appreciation of legal and regulatory issues. We aim to bring greater theoretical and analytical clarity to these issues, to examine their policy impact, and to be a catalyst for ideas on how to improve banking and financial systems at the national, regional and global levels.
