About
On the record
Emi K••• is a Tokyo-based multimedia artist who explores retro-futurism, technology, and nostalgia for Japanese youth culture and anime. Starting as a teenage street photographer in Harajuku, her work has been exhibited at the FIT Museum in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. As the lead singer and producer of "Satellite Young," she revitalizes 80s idol culture and explores modern technology, gaining exposure at SXSW 2017. In 2021, Emi embraced the Web3 movement through her 8-year-old son's "Zombie Zoo" project, inspiring Japanese creators to start NFT careers. She co-founded the community-driven anime project "Shinsei Galverse", using her own character from her music videos as an early prototype. After launching in April 2022, the project held the top spot for NFT sales volume worldwide for several days. Collaborating with animator Ayaka Ohira, Emi reinterprets 90s sci-fi anime through a magical girl lens, highlighting the liberation of women's roles in science fiction. Currently, Emi focuses on post-photography to create fictional past fads. Besides her artistic work, she is a published author, a lecturer at Tokyo University of Arts, and a frequent guest in global media discussing NFTs and Web3.
