Teaching Philosophy When a student begins the journey to become a healthcare professional, I believe they are also committing to a lifetime of learning. Medicine is a field that is ever changing. Staying current with the latest evidence-based medicine can be a daunting task and one that requires discipline. My goal is to give students tools and techniques that can be used throughout their career to ensure they continue to learn. I also strive to instill self-confidence in my students as well as the ability to maintain a positive outlook on any situation. I encourage students to begin their personal continuing education plans while they are still in school. I show them various methods to aid in their effort to stay up-to-date in the medical field. Continued learning is a vital component of providing excellent patient care. I want students to transition from comprehension of the material to a deeper understanding of how to apply the information to actual patients. While learning new guidelines or reading primary literature, I want my students to constantly ask themselves the question why? Having confidence is an important aspect of being a healthcare professional. I want to embolden my students to explore their own potential and continually look for new ways to challenge themselves. The fear of not knowing the correct answer or being wrong, plagues many students. I always encourage my students to ask difficult questions. If I am unable to answer the question immediately, I freely admit it. I try to inspire students to view these situations as opportunities to improve instead of simply a failure to answer a I believe assigning personal career goals is the best way to avoid periods of stasis in any career.
