Faro, Portugal (263) 772-146-243 dougroos@gmail.com Personal Details: Born-Harare, Irish Passport, Married,+ 3 Children CAREER STORY A businessperson, value creator and mentor, who started his business career with KPMG Johannesburg, in finance and auditing (CA.SA). For over + 25 years, I have rescued, improved, and created businesses by working and living in eight African countries and Australia. The business industries include the retail, distribution, and manufacturing areas of well-known brands as well as the export of the horticulture products of peas, protea flowers and blue berries from Southern Africa to Europe. My greenfield business setup has included retail fast food franchises in the West African countries of Cote d’ Ivoire and Ghana, in difficult economic environments to the largest protea flower farm in the world of 81 hectares under fertigation in Zimbabwe,(during a very difficult land reform program) exporting flowers to Europe and Japan. I have transitioned to an entrepreneurial value creator, seeking smarter technology in the agricultural world that delivers increased profitability and sustainability via, a) The smarter tech application of mechanical pollination, increasing current target yields by approximately 25% in the high value perennial crops of almonds, pistachios, b) the sustainability of current threatened bee populations and their health over the next + thirty years within commercial farm orchards, by assisting bee flower pollination through smarter mechanical pollination technology from Israel. Lastly, we have been establishing a family home base in Portugal, while I continue to investigate, research, and negotiate access to smarter technology from Israeli companies for the mechanical pollination of high value perennial crops. Our proposed orchard crops are currently almonds and pistachios, and the future target crops of avocados and macadamias, within the proposed territories of Portugal, and South Africa.
