About

On the record

I am a South Africa-born, UK-trained paediatrician specialising in newborn health and early child development and disability in diverse settings. I am a Professor of Neonatal Medicine & International Child Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and hold a Consultant Neonatologist post at University College London Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in addition to an Honorary Principal Scientist role at the MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit in Entebbe. My research focuses on the risks and impacts of common newborn conditions on the developing brain, and how best to support children with developmental disabilities and their families. I lead studies that aim to improve our understanding of risk factors and early predictors of outcomes related to newborn conditions and work closely with the World Health Organization and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, developing early intervention strategies for newborn brain health and early child development in diverse contexts. I am the co-founder and lead for the Baby Ubuntu programme, a participatory programme of early care and support aiming to promote participation and inclusion for children with developmental disabilities and their families, working in close partnership withorganisations and expert parents to develop strategies to promote caregiver skills and agency.
