Eliza is an emerging professional in creating sustainable communities. She is a graduate of the Environmental Studies degree (Hons.) program at the University of Manitoba and has a minor in Geography. She has skills and knowledge in Indigenous engagement, technical communications, urban ecosystems, project management & leadership. Through her work experience and academics she has developed skills in listening and engaging Indigenous communities, representatives and organizations on various topics including environmental impacts, human health, community development, and freshwater. Eliza has a keen interest in deepening her understand of diverse worldviews and different ways of knowing. She is an attentive listener with strong communication skills, in both writing and speaking. Technical communications have been an important skill in Eliza's work placements and academic career. The ability to communicate complex scientific and technical information as well as land-based knowledge in-person, through electronic correspondences and in technical writing have been essential for positions Eliza has held at Manitoba Hydro, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Environment Climate Change Canada, and as a Writing Tutor. These skills have allowed Eliza to not only be able to be an effective communicator, but have allowed her to become an effective leader and teacher. Eliza has experience in project management and leadership. Her experiences with different community groups, as a representative for students living with disabilities, and as a supervisor has allowed her to collaborate with different groups of people, innovating new methods of approaching issues and to harness the skills and knowledges of different members to make effective teams. Through co-op positions and academic courses, and conducting site visits with Indigenous monitors she has gained knowledge in urban ecosystems and sustainability. Her position maintaining native & non-native urban habitats in Winnipeg alongside her position with the Environment and Geography Students Association have provided her with an understanding of how urban ecosystems function and how sustainability can be implemented within different organizational structures. Her courses include Urban Agriculture, Environmental Conservation and Restoration, Ecology, Biology, Green Building and Planning, Environmental Economics, Political Economy, Environmental Responsibilities and the Law, Social Geography of the Environment, Contemporary Environmentalism, Geography of Natural Resources as well as Macro & Microeconomics.
