About
On the record
Award-winning journalist and newsroom manager with more than 20 years of experience. I’ve earned the respect of my teams while holding senior editorial and management roles at APTN, CBC, and Canada’s National Observer, leading them through some of the most high-stakes, high-impact journalism in the country. These days, I’m back in the creative editorial role I love most—covering Parliament, writing, podcasting, and hosting conversations that matter. I also speak regularly across North America—at IRE, NAJA, the UN, CJF J-Talks, and journalism schools. I’m a proud citizen of the Pikwàkanagàn First Nation, of mixed Algonquin and Italian descent. When I’m not engaged in acts of journalism, you’ll find me in a canoe, behind a camera, or eating frybread. Awards/Honours CAJ Charles Bury Award 2016, 2023 National Newspaper Awards’ Mary Ann Shadd Cary Award for Columns, 2022 Nieman Fellowship 2020 Co-recipient Elias Boudinot Free Press Award 2019 Hyman Solomon Award for Public Policy, 2019 Gordon Sinclair Award for Broadcast Journalism 2017 3 Native American Journalism Awards for reporting.
