About

On the record

My research has provided significant advances in knowledge of the biology, taxonomy and ecology of sharks, rays, skates and chimaeras. I have provided guidelines to assess the functional biodiversity of elasmobranch fishes in order to define management and conservation units. I have provided important information for the Shark Conservation Act in Chilean waters (Act No. 20.525; August 2011) which prohibits the shark finning in any Chilean fishery. Also, I have provided evidence of fishing collapse in the skate fishery in south Chile; which in consequence, consequence, has resulted in a restructuring of fishing allocation quotas in Chilean waters. I have provided the first quantitative analysis of species richness and abundance of sharks, rays and chimaeras in Chile, which is one of few such assessments around the world. I extended knowledge of biological and ecological interactions within the demersal ecosystem at depths of over 100 m along much of Chile’s coast which has particular relevance for future assessment of how natural or anthropogenic activities impact species, through the provision of quantitative data against which change can be assessed. Also, I published whole‐mitochondrial genome sequences of Australian and Chilean marine fishes using Next Generation Sequence technology. I have provided guidelines for a sequencing validation process, which lays the foundation for whole‐genome descriptions. Future applications of this process are reflected in my research proposal and provide a bioinformatics analysis tool to reconstruct entire phylogenies, address gene expression and genetic diversity using whole genomes.
