Director - Design for Diversity at Octopus

About

On the record

Mission: Leverage design as a tool to strengthen human rights and equal opportunities. Location(s): I've lived in the Borgerhout district of Antwerp, Belgium with my husband, Maarten, since 2020. Originally from Memphis, Tennessee in the US, I've also worked and studied in Germany, Haiti, Italy, Netherlands, Philippines, and Spain. Focus: Through Octopus, I work with young people and partners on making Design for Diversity (inclusive design) the norm of the design field. Through Civic Sphere, I help clients working in sustainable mobility thrive as they navigate technological change and seek to improve inclusion. Background: Growing up with a father who was a wheelchair user due to childhood polio – and helping him adapt public buildings to become accessible during my teenage years – taught me early on about the importance of designing for diversity. Specializations:> 2012-25: Inclusive Sustainable Mobility (mainly for public transport users, pedestrians, and cyclists), including technology & digital services > 2010-12: Affordable Housing & Disaster Recovery > 2007-09: Environmentally Sustainable Building
