Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) is the premier maritime law enforcement force functions under the Ministry of Defence. SLCG is established under the ‘Department of Coast Guard Act No. 41 of 2009’ as a multi-mission service for the purpose of ensuring the security of the coastal areas,the Maritime Zones, the territorial waters and the High seas. SLCG has been empowered to assist in preventing, the entry and exit of illegal immigrants and emigrants, the trafficking of narcotic drugs and contrabands. SLCG also entrusted to assist vessels in distress at sea and safety of life at sea, protect the marine environment, prevent and combat maritime disasters ensuring national security and protecting the national economy and the national integrity of Sri Lanka. Every Coast Guard officer of the Department of Coast Guard shall be deemed to be a ‘Peace Officer’ within the meaning for the purposes of the Code of Criminal Procedure Act No. 15 of 1979
