Oh-Lab(Ohuchi Architect and Associates) was founded by Dr. Hirotomo Ohuchi in 1988- Hirotomo Ohuchi was born in Tokyo, Japan 1954. He received Doctor of Engineering from Nihon University. He is currently professor architect at Department of Architecture in Nihon University and the principal of Ohuchi architect and associates. He is a Japan Registered Architect and a member of Japan Institute of Architects and Member of Architectural Institute of Japan. He has won many awards, notable among them being the Academy of France Architects Award in the International Architectural Design Competition For students from UIA (International Union of Architects) and The Poland Award in the International Urban Design Competition for Young Architects in 1990 from UIA (International Union of Architects).

In Japan, buildings that are more than 30 years old have been deemed worthless because of the uniform real estate evaluation system. It is a fact that old buildings get difficult to comply with earthquake, floor plan adapted to the demand, universal design, updated building law, etc. However, in most of the case, the skeleton (the building itself) is still useful. All of these building has the potential to be reborn by conversion and transformation with a value that cannot be created by new construction. Saiseikenchiku-Laboratory() is a multi-boundary practice to create new architecture with tons of the abandoned but hidden resources of buildings.

To address this, we take on roughly 80–90 renovation and conversion projects each year, responding to a wide range of client needs. In response to the vacant house issue that has gained attention in recent years, we launched our own initiative, “Kariage,” in 2015. Through this project, we lease properties whose owners find it difficult to reinvest, carry out renovation work at our own cost, and operate the properties ourselves. As Japan faces population decline and a future that differs from the era of rapid economic growth, we aim to build new business models and explore evolving possibilities—without limiting ourselves strictly to the field of architecture.
