Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. - Official
About Zeta Phi Beta Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded January 16, 1920, at Howard University, Washington, D.C. by five coeds who envisioned a sorority which would directly affect positive change, chart a course of action for the 1920s and beyond, raise consciousness of their people, encourage the highest standards of scholastic achievement, and foster a greater sense of unity among its members. These women believed that sorority elitism and socializing overshadowed the real mission for progressive organizations and failed to address fully the societal mores, ills, prejudices, and poverty affecting humanity in general and the black community in particular. Since its inception, Zeta has continued its steady climb into the national spotlight with programs designed to demonstrate concern for the human condition both nationally and internationally. The organization has been innovative in that it has chronicled a number of firsts. It was the first National Pan-Hellenic Council organization to centralize its operations in a national headquarters, first to charter a chapter in Africa, first to form auxiliary groups, and first to be constitutionally bound to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. The sorority takes pride in its continued participation in transforming communities through volunteer services from members and its auxiliaries. Zeta Phi Beta has chartered hundreds of chapters worldwide and has a membership of Zeta‘s national and local programs include the endowment of its National Educational Foundation community outreach services and support of multiple affiliate organizations. Zeta chapters and auxiliaries have given un-totaled hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, support organized charities, and promote legislation for social and civic change.

First 5 La
First 5 LA is an independent public agency with a goal to support the safe and healthy development of young children so that by 2028, all children in L.A. County will enter kindergarten ready to succeed in school and life. First 5 LA was created by voters in 1998 to invest L.A. County’s allocation of funds from California’s voter-approved Proposition 10 tax revenues. First 5 LA recognizes that changing the life trajectory of our youngest children will not be the product of Prop 10 funds alone, which now average $160 per child under the age of 5 in each county. Changing systems and policies to prioritize children at the earliest moments in their lives is what’s required to help all children have the best start possible in life. Creating an integrated and coordinated system of services and supports to strengthen families and improve child outcomes has and will continue to be the focus and value of First 5 LA to our children, families and our state’s future.

Our programs are funded primarily through the sale of donated items in our retail and online stores. Out of every dollar earned from the sale of donated goods in retail and online stores, 85 cents funds our social service programs. Each year, we keep more than 20 million pounds of textiles, books, shoes, dishes, sporting goods, furniture, computers, lamps, electronics and more out of our Inland Northwest landfills. We use the items people don't want anymore to fund life-changing programs. We maximize the power of donated goods through sales in our retail and online stores, then in our Outlet Store, and finally through Salvage and recycling. We look to protect the triple bottom - our people, our planet, and the profit that funds our programs - through strategic planning and best practices. We believe in the value of each and every individual. We treat all people with dignity and respect. We put people first, and believe in the potential of individuals to make positive changes in their lives. We pursue and celebrate diversity. We believe in giving a hand up, not a hand out. We embrace innovation, continuous improvement, creativity, collaboration, and change. We honor our heritage by being socially, professionally, financially, and environmentally responsible.
