Designed and equipped by corporate partners, this 6.6 acre urban complex will promote energy-sector research and innovation and create direct and deliberate bridges to job creation, entrepreneurship and urban economic revitalization. It is positioned in the heart of a historic neighborhood that is sandwiched between the downtown central business district and the campuses of the region’s major research universities. Because the Hill District has suffered more than fifty years of economic disenfranchisement, community partners are working to ensure that this Energy Innovation Center will become an instrument of urban economic revitalization. The energy technology innovation cluster in the Pittsburgh region has a rich history and a promising future. World-class capacity exists here in areas ranging from carbon management to nuclear reactor design, wind turbine manufacturing, materials and sensors, electric power distribution and control, shale gas production, and advanced building systems. Pittsburgh Gateways Corporation, the region’s corporations, research universities, economic development organizations, and the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory have collaborated to develop this new Center so that it will realize a vision for accelerating the Nation’s transformation of its energy systems to achieve improved national security, competitiveness, and environmental stewardship. This Center will co-locate collaborative university-industry projects, proof-of-concept energy technology demonstration laboratories, an early-stage business incubator and targeted workforce training programs. Corporate partners will showcase new products and deploy advanced energy management systems. Finally, the work of this LEED Platinum Center will catalyze the development of the surrounding 42-acre community footprint using international best practices for energy-efficient neighborhoods.

Our first pilot test's results were highlighted by Innovate Durham, EPA’s America Recycles Innovation Expo, Otronicon Technology Conference, and the 2019 All Things Open conference. —Our Reducing Waste in Durham Schools team is made up of students, parents, teachers, and community members who care about making our schools less wasteful and more sustainable. Our current main focus: ensuring DPS is actively working toward a functioning recycling program. —Our proposed $.10 fee on single-use bags passed the Durham Environmental Affairs Board (EAB) by unanimous resolution in August 2019. We are now building a coalition of ally organizations to support passage of a local law, and incorporating the bag fee into broader plastic waste prevention policy. Our Bull City Boomerang Bag innovation is making free, equitable access to reusable bags a city-wide NORM. —We coordinate a steering committee for the NC state food waste reduction bill, HB led by House Rep. Zack Hawkins.
