Sir Harry Johnston International School
The school was founded in the early 1950s when Zomba was the capital of Nyasaland Protectorate. In the early 1970s the school became one of five ‘designated schools’ under an agreement with the British government that allowed the centrally funded, private schools to continue employing expatriate teachers. In the 1990s the Designated School Board was disbanded and the school became financially independent selecting to be controlled by a democratically elected board of trustees made up from the parent community. The school consists of a Pre-Nursery and Nursery Class, Primary School and Secondary School enabling the school to cater for children between the ages of 2 and 16. It is centrally located with spectacular views of Zomba Plateau, which rises up to over metres. It has nine fully equipped classrooms, a science lab, an arts studio and a multi-purpose hall. All students have access to various ICT equipment including laptops (with internet access). Educational resources are purchased overseas if they are unavailable locally. Within the spacious and beautifully landscaped grounds there is a twenty metre swimming pool, two 7-a-side football pitches, netball field, basketball court, nursery playground and a cross country track.

Sarah's Kids
Malawi has many children who have been abandoned and forced to live on the streets due to poverty, derelict or deceased parents, abusive families, escape from slavery, or escape from childhood marriage. Samaritan Trust Shelter for Street Kids provides a place for these children to sleep, two meals a day, and help to resume their education in local government schools. While volunteering at Samaritan Trust over the course of many years, Malawi Young Life Director Sarah Adams found that the most vulnerable children from the shelter were not succeeding in school. Local government schools were often overcrowded, with as many as 100 students per teacher, so children were not able to get the attention they needed to learn, let alone catch up in school. As a result, in 2007 Sarah set up a sponsorship program in order for the most at-risk kids to attend local private schools where the student/teacher ratio is often 20/1, and the kids get the supplementary assistance they need to continue their education confidently. Holly Dunlap joined in sponsoring kids alongside Sarah in 2009. By providing all of these kids with a private education, they are much more likely to finish school, and to be eligible for college. Even having just a high school diploma puts them in the top 12% of Malawians in the job market, and having a college degree puts them in the top 1%. In 2013, Sarah Adams and two other Young Life co-workers tragically died in a car accident in Zimbabwe, and Sarah Adams Foundation was established to continue sponsorship of “Sarah’s Kids” to the highest level of education they are able to attain. In 2019 our oldest student graduated from Malawi College of Medicine and in 2020 we had 6 more college graduates in the fields of Engineering & Hospitality. Our goal is that these young students from difficult backgrounds would become the future leaders of Malawi, with the skills and education to be able to help other kids from backgrounds similar to their own.

Northsha'ar Technical College
NorthSha’ar Technical College is a subsidiary of Lilongwe North Sha’ar College of Education Limited. The college was founded after identifying a gap in institutions of higher learning in the country. While there are many colleges and universities in the country, the majority of them are offering similar social sciences and humanities courses. Thousands of graduates are leaving educational institutions without the necessary skills to enter the job market. Furthermore, the job market is overly saturated, with very few opportunities available for inexperienced individuals. As a result of these circumstances, unemployment exacerbates the vulnerability of young people and prolongs the school-to-work transition period, leading to detachment from the labor market and perpetuating cycles of dependency and poverty. Irrespective of their place of residence, the majority of young people are inactive non-students. Technical Colleges, primarily owned by the government, are designed to provide vocational training to young individuals. The main goal of these colleges is to equip students with practical skills that will enable them to enter the job market, rather than to become entrepreneurs. However, most of these colleges fail to provide practical experience to their students and predominantly offer theoretical classes that lack industry application. Again, the vast majority of graduates from these colleges are seeking employment, although it has been noted that suitable vacancies are currently scarce. Alternatively, innovation and entrepreneurship form the most practical and immediate means for young people to escape poverty, generate employment opportunities, and realize their economic potential. NorthSha’ar Technical College plays a significant role in equipping young people with more than just technical skills and competencies. We impart entrepreneurial skills, provide practical on-the-job experience, and create a platform for innovative thinking. To fulfill.
