Caribbean Institute For Meteorology And Hydrology
The Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) is a regional centre of excellence committed to advancing weather, climate, water, and environmental science for the sustainable development of the Caribbean. CIMH is an Institution of CARICOM and serves as the technical Organ of the Caribbean Meteorological Organization (CMO). Its core mandate is to improve and develop meteorological and hydrological services while promoting the socio-economic benefits of these sciences across the 16 CMO Member States. This is achieved through targeted training, applied research, scientific investigations, advisory services, and specialized technical support. Since 1973, CIMH has been affiliated with The University of the West Indies (UWI), where it delivers the BSc in Meteorology under the Faculty of Science and Technology. The Institute is internationally recognized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) as: A Regional Training Centre for meteorology, hydrology, and related disciplines A Regional Instrument Centre A Centre of Excellence in Satellite Meteorology Training The Regional Climate Centre (RCC) for the Caribbean A node of the Pan American Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System (SDS-WAS) CIMH also serves as the Caribbean Centre for Climate and Environmental Simulations the Regional Marine Forecast Support Centre, and the Climate Data Centre for the CMO. The Institute supports national and regional efforts to build resilience against hydro-meteorological and climate-related risks, including droughts, floods, tropical cyclones, and agricultural impacts. Through partnerships with regional and international organisations, CIMH drives innovation in impact-based forecasting, agro-meteorology, and climate-smart decision support, contributing to sustainable development and disaster risk reduction across the region. Based in Barbados, CIMH continues to strengthen the Caribbean's capacity to adapt and thrive in a changing climate.
