Mountains To Sea Conservation Trust
Established in 2002 in Northland, Mountains to Sea sees education as a vital part of society and central to all environmental restoration. Our marine and freshwater programmes involve young people, their parents and the wider community. Our goal is to empower and support communities to achieve marine and freshwater conservation through science based experiential programmes, resources, projects and community engagement. The Trust works from a vision that sees communities ultimately holding the solutions and resources to tackle the environmental problems that we face today. The Trust will strive to work in ways that builds community involvement, fosters equity, and works toward a shared vision of ecological sustainability as the basis of all community. In the vision of our Trust, the biodiversity of our ocean, coastal areas, our streams, rivers, lakes and wetlands is respected as a taonga (treasure). We view these systems as a whole with no boundaries. Restoration of any part of the system supports the whole. Ours is a special generation, we have the opportunity and obligation to reverse past trends of exploitation of the natural world. We feel there is an urgent need to halt continued degradation of the natural systems and biodiversity upon which all life ultimately depends. In the social and cultural realms there are positive paths forward which we will work to develop and support. We embraced (and continue to) a philosophy of experiential learning and fostering community engagement in education for sustainability and action. Our work is unique in its simple yet powerful principles and robust scientific foundation. Through this we deliver solutions to some of New Zealand’s most pressing environmental challenges.

Read Nz Te Pou Muramura
We believe reading makes life better. As Aotearoa New Zealand’s national agency dedicated to reading for pleasure, we advocate for the transformative power of reading and its ability to improve our lives, both individually, and collectively. Founded in 1972 as the Book Council, Read NZ Te Pou Muramura continues to grow new generations of readers by delivering programmes in schools and communities, including our popular Writers in Schools programme. Our special name expresses the concept of moving from darkness into light, as told in the Māori creation story. This metaphor can also be used to describe what happens during the process of reading. ‘Muramura’ is a glowing ember, flame or blaze, and ‘pou’ is an upright supporting post or pole. Te Pou Muramura speaks to the sustenance of a blaze, in the way that reading can spark a glow or light in our minds. We run campaigns to encourage New Zealanders to read, research our reading habits and barriers to reading, and advocate for the importance of reading.

Code-Ed By Joy Allcock
Code Ed by Joy Allcock develops evidence-proven structured literacy resources that support educators to improve reading and writing outcomes from Pre-K through the elementary and upper grades. Our work is grounded in the Shine Literacy Project, a large independent research study led by Joy Allcock designed and evaluated by Professor James Chapman (Massey University). The research demonstrated accelerated literacy progress and the closing of achievement gaps, regardless of students’ socioeconomic background or first language. Code Ed supports educators across the full literacy continuum: – Pre-K and Transitional Kindergarten: Key Foundations builds oral language, phonological awareness, early decoding, and social-emotional learning — the vital precursors for literacy success. – Kindergarten to Grade 2: The Code Is the Key provides whole-class instruction that explicitly teaches how the English language works, building shared knowledge for reading, writing, and spelling. – Grade 3 and beyond: Targeted resources address unfinished learning in decoding, spelling, and multisyllabic word reading. Our approach is evidence-proven and endorsed by Professor John Hattie, Dean Pedro Noguera, and Dr Eugenia Mora-Flores for its impact on learning and equity. Code Ed resources are used by educators in Canada (through Scholastic Education), the United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, with Malaysia launching in May 2026. Our focus is prevention, acceleration, and equity — ensuring every student can become a confident reader and writer, and every educator is equipped with tools that work in practice.
