International Carbon Registry Icr
There is a great need for immediate climate action with tools to mobilize financing for transition to a low-carbon economy and the need grows more urgent by the day. To achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the global community needs to reach net-zero emissions by no later than 2050. The voluntary carbon market has the potential to significantly accelerate efforts to mitigate climate change and achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. Investments needed for scaling emerging low-carbon technologies do not meet the risk and return expectations of today’s markets. An effective and adaptable carbon market can facilitate capital flows to these technologies through carbon offsetting mechanisms established on the principles that emerged in initiatives such as Clean Development Mechanism. Carbon credits enable organizations to compensate for emissions by financing the avoidance/reduction of emissions from other sources, or removal of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and thus contribute to the transition to global net-zero. Carbon credits also support emerging climate technologies and can help scale down costs and introduce these technologies to market earlier by decreasing additional costs against carbon-intensive alternatives. It is thus crucial to identify and support new and expensive technology and to help finance and deploying these solutions now, so that economic development can continue in countries across the world, including those rapidly industrializing today

ABOUT OUR WASTE MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE: We have developed ÚLLI, an innovative waste management software designed for companies, municipalities, and institutions. ÚLLI provides a clear overview of waste streams and supports data-driven decision-making to reduce costs and lower carbon footprints. ABOUT OUR PLASTIC RECYCLING FACILITIES We proudly operate Iceland’s only plastic recycling plant, located in the south of the country and powered entirely by geothermal steam and hydropower. Currently, we recycle the majority of agricultural film plastic used in Iceland and are continuously expanding to process additional plastic types. Our recycling process has been shown to have up to an 82% lower carbon footprint per ton of recycled plastic compared to the EU average. Additionally, by recycling one ton of plastic and returning it to the market, we prevent approximately 1.5 tons of CO₂-equivalent emissions that would otherwise result from the production of virgin materials. In 2024 we started producing an end product from our recycled plastic, containers that will be sold in Iceland and will be recycled again and again.

Carbon Iceland
Carbon Iceland is aspired to fight climate change on a large scale. By using direct air capture technology – more than 10 years in the making – that can capture carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere and also, by using technology to capture CO2 from industrial emissions, Carbon Iceland will be able to prevent millions of tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. Carbon Iceland will harvest these two sources of CO2 to create green fuel for the shipping, aviation and other transportation. The CO2 that will not be used for green fuel will be used to produce green CO2 for food enrichment and the beverage industry.

As of January 2024, the Soil Conservation Service of Iceland (SCSI, Landgræðslan) and the Icelandic Forest Service (Skógræktin) merged to form The Land and Forest Iceland, https://landogskogur.is/ The Soil Conservation Service of Iceland was for 116 years Iceland´s leading agency for ecosystem restoration and soil conservation. This work continues as part of the new larger Land and Forest Iceland and under new law of land and forest no. The new pages are https://landogskogur.is/ and here: Historic overview The Soil Conservation Service of Iceland (SCSI, Landgræðslan) was founded in 1907. It was a governmental agency under the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. It operated under the law of soil conservation (155/2018). The main tasks of the SCSI included combating desertification, sand encroachment and other soil erosion, promotion of sustainable land use and reclamation and restoration of degraded land. The work was on different levels, from policy making and research, to extension services and management of large- and small-scale reclamation projects. Ecosystem degradation is by far the largest environmental problem in Iceland. Vast areas have been desertified after over-exploitation – the speed of erosion magnified by volcanic activity and harsh weather conditions. SCSI was dedicated to the prevention of erosion and to reclamation of eroded land. SCSI promoted sustainability and ecosystem approach to revegetation and climate mitigation. The SCSI work covered: Land protection, Sustainability, Climate mitigation, Research and development, Public relations and Administration.
