Gambia
The Gambia, country in western Africa situated on the Atlantic coast and surrounded by the neighboring country of Senegal. It occupies a long narrow strip of land that surrounds the Gambia River. The land is flat and is dominated by the river, which is navigable throughout the length of the country. The Gambia is Africa’s smallest non-island country. It is also one of Africa’s most densely populated countries. A few towns are located upriver, but most Gambians live in rural villages. The major ethnic groups are similar to those in Senegal and consist of the majority Malinke and also include Wolof, Fulani (Fulbe), Diola (Jola), and Soninke peoples. The Gambia Standards Bureau was established by the Government of the Gambia through an Act of Parliament in 2010 called The Gambia Standards Bureau Act. The Bureau itself began operations in October 2011.The Bureau is overseen by a Board of Directors which is currently chaired by an independent private individual. Its membership is specified in the Act and is composed of representatives of Government, Consumers, Private Sector and Academia. The Board determines the overall policy and strategy of the Bureau including its finances. Our main goal is to standardize goods, services and systems in accordance with internationally-recognized procedures to enhance industrial growth and efficiency, facilitate trade, promote health, safety and environmental protection and ensuring that we are the leading standardization institution in promoting industrial growth and consumer welfare.

The Gambia Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) is a multi-sector regulator established by an Act of the National Assembly of The Gambia. Under The Gambia Public Utilities Authority Act of 2001 (The PURA Act), which came into force at the latter part of 2003, the National Assembly (Parliament) set up PURA as a multi-sector regulator. Under the PURA Act, PURA is mandated to regulate the following sectors: 1. Broadcasting 2. Electricity 3. Telecommunications 4. Transportation 5. Water & Sewage sectors and; 6. other public utilities as subsequently prescribed by Government. However, it was decided in its early years in existence, that PURA would not have the capacity to regulate all these sectors at once and therefore a recommendation was made that PURA focus on the regulation of: 1. Telecommunications 2. Electricity 3. Water and Sewerage
