Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas (National Research University) was founded on 17 April 1930 by academician Ivan Gubkin. Today Gubkin University is the leading university in Russia in oil and gas sphere. Since 2008, a rector of Gubkin University is D.Sc, Professor Victor G. Martynov. The University provides undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate programs, and employer-sponsored training. There are more than 250 additional professional education programs, 19 bachelor, 11 master and 3 specialist degree programs. Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography (MIIGAiK) was established in 1779 and it is the center of higher geodetic education in Russia and the largest educational institution of this type in Europe. MIIGAiK educates researchers by means of postgraduate courses; eight specialized academic councils are established for scientific theses and dissertations to be defended. The studies that are being conducted in MIIGAiK embrace almost the whole range of problems of geodesy, cartography, and cadastre, as well as such specific fields as precise instrument-making, geoinformatics, ecology and remote sensing.
