Ballintubber Abbey Trust
Ballintubber Abbey was founded in 1216 and has hosted Mass continuously since, even when without a roof! Attempts at restoration took place in 1846, and in 1966 the nave of the Abbey was restored and roofed in time for the 750th anniversary. In 1997 The Chapter House and Dorter were restored and plans are in place for a visitor and interpretive centre, with hopes that work will commence in 2022. Located near the Wild Atlantic Way, the Abbey serves as a parish church, wedding venue and tourist attraction with gift shop, welcoming visitors from all over the world. We are also the starting point for the Tóchar Phádraig Pilgrim Path walk to Croagh Patrick and the administrative centre for the five Pilgrim Paths of Ireland. One of the top things to do in Mayo, visitors can take self-guided tours using our maps, or can take advantage of the knowledge of our friendly tour guides.
