FlexDanmark blev grundlagt i 1997. Siden 2012 har FlexDanmark været ejet af Danmarks fem største trafikselskaber. FlexDanmarks primære opgaver er at anskaffe, udvikle og servicere de IT-løsninger trafikselskaberne bruger til at levere flextrafik. Flextrafik er som offentlig samkørselstjeneste en del af den samfundskritiske infrastruktur for kollektive trafiktilbud i Danmark. Der bliver planlagt og gennemført ca. 6 mio. ture årligt, for borgere, der har behov for større fleksibilitet i valg af destination og rejsetidspunkt end det den rutebunde kollektive trafik kan tilbyde. Alle borgere har mulighed for at lade sig befordre af flextrafik, men de primære målgrupper er borgere visiteret til patientbefordring, handicapkørsel, skolekørsel og andre kommunale kørselsordninger. Flextrafik køres af vognmænd, som trafikselskaberne indgår kontrakter med. Vognmændenes biler og chauffører indgår i den dynamiske planlægning og gennemførelse af flextrafikken. Planlægningen skal således håndtere kompleksiteten i at kunne realtidsplanlægge på baggrund af skiftende efterspørgsel og antal vogne til rådighed, med forskellige kørselsmønstre og serviceparametre for den enkelte borger. Løsningerne til flextrafikken er komplekse, og det er FlexDanmarks kerneforretning at anskaffe, udvikle og servicere løsningerne i samarbejde med trafikselskaberne, løsningsleverandører, netværk og samarbejdspartnere.
