Ntech Training Centre
NTECH Training Centre is an institution led by women. It was founded in 2021 to provide a safe space and maintain privacy of digital content especially for the ladies who are not culturally comfortable to have their digital devices repaired by male technicians. Currently, our focus is within Mombasa’s community which esteems the value of decency and privacy highly, especially for women. For example, women are required to cover themselves when they step out of their homes by wearing a headscarf (hijab) and Abaya. However, these ladies own ICT equipment; laptops and/or smart phones which contain their personal data including documents that they would not share with the public and pictures of themselves dressed with no hijab or Abaya. When a lady’s laptop fails, they are forced to take it for repair, more often, to a male technician which in return leaves their privacy vulnerable. This therefore makes it culturally uncomfortable to have their devices repaired by male technicians. Lack of well-trained female technicians in Mombasa, has shown a rising need to equip girls and women with technical skills in repair and maintenance of ICT asset. Having more female technicians contributes to a more circular approach to utilizing ICT assets in a sustainable way, rather than the current store away approach when these assets are damaged/require service. NTECH recognizes that, due to cultural norms, women would feel more at ease and comfortable having their gadgets repaired by fellow women. As a result, having skilled female technicians will create job opportunities for women, as well as a sense of belonging for the girls, who have been trusted to uphold privacy of other women.
