Fida Federation Of Women Lawyers Lesotho

The Lesotho Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) is the lead organization in Lesotho, providing advice and information on women and children’s rights so that they can achieve social justice. Current work especially focuses on property or land claims, domestic abuse, women’s empowerment and children’s rights. We offer:focus group Legal advice and support Mediation and Litigation Training on human rights and legislation Educational materials for sensitization Our work in Lesotho has led to a number of major changes to legislation such as the Inheritance Act ammendment of 1992 which gave married women the right to own land. We have also advocated for the enactment of the Legal Capacity of Married Persons Act 2006. This legislation empowered women in the marriage by removing the notion of marital power to ensure that they had a right to influence decisions that affect their lives. Other achievements include ensuring that married women have a right to a pension and domestic workers receive a minimum wage.
