The county of AlUla is an extraordinary destination which has, until recently, been left virtually undiscovered and presents filmmakers and the world at large with some of the world’s most sensational scenery. The vast scope of impressive landscapes located along what was historically known as the Incense Route is home to years of history, including the ancient city of Hegra, the Kingdom’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, and historical sites dating back to the Neolithic era through to the Ancient Arabian Kingdoms of the Dadanites and Nabataeans, the Roman era and the early Islamic period. The terrain features breath-taking rock formations, volcanic craters, luscious oasis, untouched wilderness, fascinating wildlife, microclimates, and vast sandstone canyons. The extraordinary sweeping vistas present the perfect backdrop for a wide range of genres such as historical epics, fantasy adventures, extra-terrestrial worlds, and dramatic war movies, and can stand in for an array of different locations, countries, cities, or even another period in time. The festival has hosted many filmmakers and experts from all over the world and built bridges to transfer knowledge and experiences to filmmakers in the Kingdom through workshops, seminars, and its own published books in each edition. The mission of this cultural movement is to develop creative human resources by sponsoring and encouraging talents in filmmaking, which the festival is obligated to continue to do through the Culture and Arts Association in Dammam and its official partner Ithra Center and with the support of the Film Commission of the Ministry of Culture. The essence of this mission is to consider the importance of cultural diversity in Saudi Arabia and export it to the world through films, and encourage the discovery of new voices and visions in cinema.
