Gudhaam Antiques & Art
Gudhaam’ is the Malayalam word for warehouse, obviously derived from the term ‘go down’. Our exclusive gudhaam, right at the heart of Gujarati Street, is almost 160 years old, this building is initially used as storage unit for rice sacks, the traditional building and business has now been entirely transformed into a modern enterprise while still retaining its timeless heritage. Gudhaam is a new idea founded on old origins – literally breathing new life into age-old cultures through the revival architectural style! Along the northern shores of Malabar, experience a part of history and a sense of nostalgia passed down through generations of families.Welcome to Calicut‘s distinguished neighbourhood of art and commerce, better known to Kozhikodens as Gujarati street. A stone's throw from the south beach, it is a historic locality with a vibrant community, neatly sandwiched between Halwa bazar and Palayam. As you meander down the narrow pathways, it is almost impossible not to feel a strange harmony all around. The first thing you’d notice is the calming ambience, a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of other streets. Many an artist has been inspired by a soothing stroll through Gujarati street under the evening Calicut sky. The very next thing that tantalises your senses would be the exotic smells of the place-the unmistakable smell of rice grains, Malabar spices and gunny sacks. Stacked sacks and cartons are a common sight at every corner, but that’s not what catches your eyes. Everywhere you look, you are guaranteed to receive a warm smile from the street’s many residents. Some would even invite you into their little two-storied homes for a chai!

Hh Maharaja Sir Jiwajirao Scindia Museum
The Jai Vilas Palace was constructed in 1874 by Maharaja Jayajirao Scindia (1843-86) of the Maratha Scindia Dynasty, the then-Maharaja of the Princely State of Gwalior. It is an inspired amalgam of three architectural styles - a Tuscan first storey, an Italian Doric second storey, and a third storey that draws inspiration from Corinthian design. Unlike other palaces in India, the Jai Vilas has minimal Indo-Saracenic features, nor does it incorporate many local motifs or regional iconography. It is, rather, an European masterpiece living in the heart of India, inspiring awe amongst visitors from across the world. On 12th December, 1964, Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia converted the West and South wings of the Palace into a museum, in memory of her beloved husband HH Maharaja Sir Jiwaji Rao Scindia, the last Maharaja of the Princely State of Gwalior. Over the years, portions of the West wing of the Palace have also been added to the Museum. They enable glimpses of art, culture and Maratha history, and of the lifestyle of the Scindia Dynasty of Gwalior. The collection is quintessentially cross-cultural, showcasing congruence and diversity in artistic expression across milieus. With 42 galleries at present, the Museum displays diverse collections, dating from the 18th to the 20th Centuries including textile, vintage cars, Palanquins, photographs, paintings, furniture, royal kitchens, arms and armour, crystal collection, hunting trophies and many others.
