Pertapis Education And Welfare Centre
PERTAPIS was formed in 1969 by a group of young aspiring Muslims who believed in the importance of moral and religious education in order to build a strong resilient self in youth. In the days of kampung living, the community would come together to help ease the burden of families in need. For most, this did not change even after modernisation and families moved into flats. They carried on that kampung spirit by forming ‘block committees’ and organising activities involving social interaction, community bonding and welfare support. From its humble beginnings, Pertapis, as a ‘self-help organisation’ is today an approved charitable organisation under the Charities Act with Institution of Public Character (IPC) status and has helped more than families in need.

Beyond Social Services
We believe that youth offending is the product of young people’s environment and not inherent in them. As such, all our work moves towards the development of “villages” with the capacity to raise children. With the support of such a “village,” young people from disadvantaged and troubled backgrounds can escape the cycle of poverty and crime and be responsible citizens. We do not define citizenship by one’s passport but by one’s willingness and commitment to be part of a “village” that looks out for its vulnerable members. “It takes a village to raise a child” and so we bring together people in the children’s family support network, their neighbourhood and those from the larger Singapore community to be that “village” and to show young people the meaning and value of responsible citizenship. In this light, our programmes are simply the “doors” by which people come to us but our work as a whole, follows a similar flow. We deescalate a crisis or problem to a point where the families can take charge; provide an environment for these families to utilise their strengths in problem-solving and finally, we find avenues for people into a community. This way, people remain in control of their difficulties, learn to become inter-dependent on family and friends and move beyond the need for professional support. Pace Uwcsea
PACE (Parents Action for Community and Education) is a dynamic parent service organisation at United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA) dedicated to upholding the UWC Mission of making education a force for uniting people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. Fully funded and managed by UWCSEA parents, PACE was established in 2001 by one parent as a means to provide scholarships for a few children. Today with the support of more than 100 parent volunteers and donors, PACE is playing a pivotal role in transforming hundreds of lives through education. Empowering through Education: In partnership with two NGO's - Cahaya Surya Bakti in Malaysia and Lihuk in the Philippines - PACE supports life-changing education initiatives for marginalised children. By providing secondary education for young Rohingya refugees in Malaysia and funding education and nutrition for children living in slums in the Philippines, we are creating pathways out of statelessness and poverty. Uniting through Action: We believe in living the UWC mission alongside our children. Through a range of social and service initiatives PACE brings together UWCSEA parents, alumni, and families to create lasting impact and nurture a culture of compassion and service. Our vibrant calendar of social activities such as heritage walks and bike rides creates opportunities for parents to connect and explore Singapore. Our local volunteer program includes beach clean-ups, preparing meals for migrant workers, and escorting children from low-income families to the supermarket to buy food. Discover the power of education and community with PACE! Join us today and be a part of something truly special. Together, we can inspire hope and create a brighter future.
