Bahamas National Trust
Picture the most precious thing you own. Who do you rely on to protect it? You may not realize it, but if you value the breathtaking beauty of The Bahamas, you are already relying on us – The Bahamas National Trust. We are the national park service of The Bahamas. We are the caretakers, protectors, and voice of The Bahamas’ most precious natural resource, its unique and diverse national park system. National parks are defenders of the environment. They are special areas that have been set aside to ensure that the natural beauty and richness of The Bahamas remain for the enjoyment and benefit of future generations. National parks are also natural barometers of our environment that tell us when there is cause for concern. Our work, however, involves so much more than national park management. We touch the lives of people annually with our award-winning educational and outreach programmes, which use the national parks as outdoor classrooms that awe and inspire people to become lifelong caretakers of our most precious natural resources. We conduct important scientific research to protect economically important fisheries, conserve critically endangered species, and inform governmental policies. Simply put, our work is anything but simple.

Hands For Hunger
Hands For Hunger was started by a group of Bahamian student leaders in early 2008, who were and still are, committed to making a difference in the world. Our inspiration was founded on the critical realization that an incredible amount of edible food is thrown away every single day by restaurants, hotels, cruise ships, markets, bakeries and other local vendors. Meanwhile, countless people struggle to secure their next meal. We asked ourselves how we can possibly expect issues of violence, crime, poor education, unemployment and environmental ills to be eliminated, when we cannot first satisfy the most basic of human needs by guaranteeing that every citizen has food to eat. Each day our team sets out to pick up fresh, high quality food that would otherwise go to waste. Our donors include: grocery stores, distributors, restaurants, and hotels. Hands For Hunger transports this food within hours to those who need it most - community centers, shelters, churches and soup kitchens throughout the island. These agencies provide food to hungry children, seniors on fixed income, women seeking refuge from domestic abuse, the homeless, the disabled, psychiatric patients and many more who cannot provide for themselves. Our Mission Hands For Hunger is a humanitarian organization committed to the elimination of hunger and the reduction of food waste through the creation of meaningful and engaging partnerships formed amongst all sectors of the Bahamian community. We strive to inspire a shared sense of social and environmental responsibility amongst citizens, who, individually and collectively, come to realize the power of their own contributions. We do this by food rescue and distribution, education and other innovative solutions.

Friends Of The Environment Friends
Friends of the Environment (FRIENDS) is a Bahamian non-profit organization that was established in 1988 by a group of four Hope Town residents. Suzanne Bethel, Candace Key, Rudy Malone and Frank Kenyon were concerned about the unsustainable use of Abaco's natural resources; the organization was developed out of their desire to help. FRIENDS operated as an all-volunteer group for many years with committee and Board meetings often being held at the Hope Town Harbour Lodge or Abaco Inn. FRIENDS was known for coordinating community cleanups, hosting plant sales, and advocating for change at a time when The Bahamas was facing wild dolphin capture, cruise ship dumping, and long-line fishing, among other issues. As the years passed it became obvious that the needs of Abaco's environment had outgrown the small volunteer-only group. FRIENDS was lucky to be the recipient of a capacity-building grant from The Nature Conservancy in the early which facilitated the hiring of FRIENDS' first staff person, and the opening of an office in Marsh Harbour, enabling the organization to reach more people. In 2006, with the hiring of more staff, FRIENDS officially launched its education program, working to raise awareness of Abaco's natural resources and build pride and stewardship amongst Abaco's students. Since then, FRIENDS has reached over students through classroom presentations, field trips, after-school clubs, and summer camps. In 2015, the opening of the Frank Kenyon Centre for Research, Education, and Conservation helped build further connections between science and the community. FRIENDS now has a full-time staff of six Bahamians and a board of 11, drawing from diverse fields such as research, education, fishing, and tourism. We are the only Abaco-based non-profit dedicated to raising awareness of Abaco's environment and effecting conservation through education.
