The Pacific Islands Heritage Foundation (PIHF) is a nonprofit startup focused on heritage in sustainable local development, with its Operational Headquarters in Manila, Philippines. We currently operate a Secretariat in Saipan, CNMI and a Sub-Regional Office for Micronesia, located in the Republic of Palau. It is our mission to place a premium on the cultural and natural landscapes of the Pacific Islands and become the preferred partner and network for those who embrace heritage and stewardship as essential to the sustainable future of Oceania. The most critical focus areas that warrant our attention include: Cultural & Natural Heritage, Education, Health & Well-Being, and Social & Economic Development. With an extensive network in and outside the region, PIHF is able to offer and support expert-led services, projects and programs that embody the values of heritage and stewardship, while simultaneously pointing forward. Kindling Kiribati
Kindling Kiribati is looking to “kindle” the economy of Kiribati (pronounced “kitty-bus”). Kiribati is a remote island nation just North of Fiji. According to the United Nations over 50% of the population falls below the basic needs poverty line. The average daily wage is $1.50 a family. Unemployment is estimated at over 40%. Kindling Kiribati is creating a sustainable program to support women starting their own businesses. Kindling Kiribati will not provide handouts. Instead we are hoping to help the people provide for themselves. Starting in May 2019 Utah State University interns will spend the summer teaching a cohort of individuals basic business practices and refining their current business ideas. Once the course is completed individuals will be supplied with a subsidized loans allowing them to start their own business. As the loans are repaid we will reinvest proceeds to provide more loans overtime to the people of Kiribati.
