Youth Votes Matter
Youth Votes Matters emerged as the direct byproduct of a lack of unbiased, non-partisan, youth-centric political commentary in Trinidad and Tobago on the precipice of the August 10th General Election. A group of young people came together and started a project that would eventually grow into a Regional movement. Youth Voice Matters facilitated several live panel discussions with prospective politicians, activists and key stakeholders across Trinidad and Tobago and focused the dialogue on politicians working for young people. We also focused the narrative on breaking down what is seemingly a complex political system into a manner that would be more palatable and better received by young people. Moreover, we would have broken ALL available manifestos into a concise, simple and receptible manner to ensure that young people understand the plans of potential governments- plans which will ultimately affect them the most. Since then, Youth Voice Matters has created a framework for youth-centric election monitoring and has partnered with the Guild (Student Government) of the University of the West Indies at all five campuses, tackled topical issues across Trinidad and Tobago understanding that politics affects every element of society and has expanded beyond the borders of Trinidad and Tobago.
