Open Society-Africa
George Soros began his philanthropy in South Africa, giving scholarships to Black South African students in 1979. The Foundations’ work in Africa has expanded dramatically since then, and notably provided support to a range of civil society groups that helped drive a wave of democratic change starting in the 1990s. With the end of apartheid, we opened our national foundation in South Africa in 1993, followed by our first African regional foundation—the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa—in 1997. Our Open Society Initiative for West Africa, based in Dakar, followed in The Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa opened its doors in Nairobi in 2005, after Kenya held multiparty elections in 2002. Santa Shoebox Project
TRADITIONAL SANTA SHOEBOX - Since 2006, 1 301 508 Shoeboxes have reached underprivileged children throughout South Africa and Namibia. Santa Shoebox donors choose their beneficiaries by name, age and gender and are given each child’s clothing size. Donors are able to track their Shoebox from the moment it’s pledged to the magical moment it’s handed to the child. Every Santa Shoebox must contain all 8 specified items, chosen with the underprivileged child at heart. These are a toothbrush, toothpaste, facecloth, soap, sweets, school supplies, a toy and an outfit of clothing – all new, unused and age-appropriate. Every Shoebox is checked upon drop off to ensure compliance and to protect the safety of the children. VIRTUAL SANTA SHOEBOX - These are purchased online by donors – the Generic is available year-round, while the Personalised version is available from Mandela Day onward. The VSS meets the need of donors who live far from drop-off points and are delivered to children in far-flung rural areas. Components are chosen by the donor on the SSP website and the Shoeboxes are packed by the SSP Team. A Virtual Santa Shoebox contains all 8 specified items as well as additional items such as a lunchbox and books, and costs R500.00 plus an optional delivery fee of R30.00. SSP LEGACY - All operating costs of the Santa Shoebox Project are covered by its main corporate sponsors. SSP Legacy brings permanent change to the lives of Santa Shoebox beneficiary children and to the impoverished communities in which they live, by establishing new and transforming existing Early Childhood Development Centres in rural South Africa, with the focus on infrastructure & DBE (Department of Basic Education) registration, teacher training, early literacy and water solutions. We’ve built 6 schools, trained thousands of teachers and installed hundreds of reading corners in under-resourced Early Childhood Development Centres, impacting an additional 170 thousand children in need.

Angels' Care
Angels' Care was established by concerned residents in the Umngeni Municipal area to address the needs of desperately poor residents from the local informal settlements. Our main objective is supporting the children. We have taken a comprehensive approach to this; through the provision of pre-school education, aftercare facilities, our daily feeding scheme, and health care programs - including a crisis centre for women and children who are victims of rape, gender-based violence, neglect, sexual assault, and abuse. We are continually developing our facilities and finding new effective ways to provide much-needed help. Recognizing the impact sustained nutrition can have on developing communities, we run an essential daily feeding program for impoverished families and children. During the COVID-19 Pandemic we have been feeding 350 children daily (2100 food parcels a week), as well as sending 120 -150 weekly family food parcels each week. As a result of generous donations, we have been able to acquire our own premises. These consist of a 100-year-old house purchased in 2009, a caretakers cottage and 3 new classrooms constructed in 2010. Our crisis centre was developed in 2015. Our rape crisis facility dedicated to supporting the women and children who fall victim to domestic abuse and sexual assault. With a full-time nurse and social worker, we can ensure cases are opened, medical examinations completed & vital DNA evidence is collected. We strive to restore dignity to survivors and are on hand to offer emotional counseling whenever it is needed.

Past Africa
We help discover, protect & share fossil evidence that highlights our African birthplace, our shared origins and our place in nature to end discrimination and the destruction of our planet and foster science-based thinking. Dig Deeper PAST is the largest, independent, African-based not-for-profit working in the origin sciences, supporting education, research and public understanding programming on the prehistoric origins of life and humankind. Since 1994, we’ve used the science of our shared origins to pursue our core mission, which is to benefit humankind’s future. We do this by providing a science-based perspective on two of the greatest challenges facing societies everywhere: discrimination (particularly that based on race) and the rapid, human-induced loss of natural environments and biodiversity. PAST is predicated on the belief that ignoring lessons from the vast 3.8-billion-year period of prehistory, which preceded written history and during which life on Earth originated and diversified, is like a 40-year-old basing a crucial decision on experience gained in the last 30-minutes of their life. The funds we raise support four main areas of activity – research, postgraduate training, youth education and public understanding. PAST-funded research by African-based palaeontologists and archaeologists plays an important role in collectively and conclusively showing that Africa is the birthplace of humankind and in demonstrating the shared origins of all people and all living things. In pursuit of the development of African science, we provide bursaries for origin sciences postgraduate students who are training at African universities. Evidence from these two areas of our work is marshalled for Walking Tall, our acclaimed secondary school education programme, as well as our global public understanding campaign, All from One.

Dlala Nje
Dlala Nje was founded in October 2012 and is an organisation that aims to to challenge perceptions and to create opportunities. We do this through running inner-city immersions and experiences in some of our city’s most misunderstood areas; Hillbrow, Berea and Yeoville. These immersions and walks fund the running of a community centre aimed at providing a safe learning environment for children from the community. Our inner-city adventures and immersive experiences provide a platform for challenging the preconceived ideas that most people have of the areas in which work. The history of Hillbrow is infamous and there are many social issues that have historically plagued this community. However, as one of the first landing spots for foreign Africans who are hoping to better their lives in the City of Gold, it is a melting pot of culture. Dlala Nje aims to show people the truth about these notorious suburbs; through an unforgettable adventure where thinking is challenged and comfort zones are stepped out of. We offer walks through Hillbrow, Berea and Yeoville that run weekly and our key markets here are tourists and adventurous individuals. We also run Corporate Culture and Market Insight immersions that are targeted at organisations. Despite our optimism, we also realise that these communities are not really places where kids can be kids. At our Dlala Nje Community Centre we offer a safe, diverse and engaging environment. We want to provide a place where kids can experience new things and awaken their passions. A place where talent is nurtured and confidence is built. Our current activities include ballet, arts & crafts, drama, dancing, music and yoga. We place a huge emphasis on education and provide free computers, Internet access, daily homework facilitation, a library and an environment for kids to reach their potential. We do this with our staff, who are all from the communities in which we work, and with support from dynamic partners and volunteers.
