On 30 December 1813 Dr Coke, seven missionaries (William Ault, Benjamin Clough, George Erskine, Martin Harvard, James Lynch, Thomas H. Squance) and two of the missionaries' wives left Portsmouth and sailed to Ceylon. Mrs Ault and Dr. Coke died on the journey. When the arrived in Bombay, they had little money, but they were helped by Governor Evan Nepean and W. T. Money, a merchant. Five of the missionaries (Ault, Clough, Erskine, Lynch and Squance) sailed from Bombay on 20 June 1814 and arrived in Galle on the south coast of Ceylon on 29 June 1814. On 11 July 1814, the missionaries gathered together to decide who would be stationed where – Lynch and Squance were to go to Jaffna in the north; Ault was to go to Batticaloa in the east; Erskine was to go to Matara in the south, and Clough was to remain in Galle. Harvard and his wife later joined clough. Lynch and Squance left Galle on 14 July 1814 and arrived in Jaffna on 10 August 1814 where they established the Wesleyan Methodist Mission, North Ceylon. On 1 August 1816, the mission purchased from the government the former orphanage situated opposite the esplanade in Jaffna. In 1817 the Jaffna Wesleyan English School was founded with Rev. Lynch as principal. The school transferred to the Vembadi site in 1825. The school was renamed Jaffna Central School in 1834 by the then principal Rev. Dr. Peter Percival. In the same year, a separate girls school was established which was renamed Vembadi Girls' High School in 1897. Kingswood College Kandy
Kingswood College was founded by Louis Edmund Blaze, with only eleven students, as a boys' high school. At the time, most schools on the island had been classified as state‑aided government schools or missionary schools. Government grants were available until a school showed itself established, with a solid core of able teachers and an expanding roll, but institutions run by individuals did not qualify for government assistance. The first few years of the school's existence were a struggle for Blaze. Fee income barely covered the cost of running the school, so Blaze had no option but to hand the struggling institution over to be managed by the Methodist mission. In 1961, the school was taken over by the state. Louis Edmund Blaze, Founder Principal of Kingswood College Under the aegis of the mission, Blaze left an indelible stamp over the school. From the outset, he modelled the school on the English public school system. It is not without significance that a house system was introduced to the school in 1922, and the names selected were those of major English public schools;(Eton, Harrow, Winchester and Rugby). He built up the school on the strength of his own reputation. It was he who coined the term Gentlemen of Kingswood to describe the body of students of his school and he who chose a motto for the school in Latin; Fide et Virtute. He then chose the distinctive school colours maroon and dark blue and he wrote the words of the school song. The school was the first in Sri Lanka to introduce rugby, the first boys' school to employ a female teacher, the first to introduce the sport of rowing and one of the first to establish a Cadet Corps. The first prize giving was held in 1895, only four years after the school was founded and became an annual feature thereafter. One notable feature of the Kingswood Prize Giving was the Prologue written by Blaze, a review in verse of the year's events in the country and the world.

The Rainbow Centre and its children are protected by 24-hour professional security staff. All of the Centre’s work is made possible by the generosity of its donors who enable this life changing work to continue and grow. The gratitude of everyone involved with the work of the Rainbow Centre is infinite. Education The belief that poor outcomes are inevitable for children who come from generations of illiterate, destitute families and that the discrimination that these children experience on the basis of poverty are accepted as the norm. The result has typically been that each new generation believes that they are destined to follow in the steps of their parents and endure teenage pregnancy, the insecurity and hardship of work as, for example, day labourers, rubbish collectors, toilet cleaners and exploited sex workers. The Rainbow Centre has already demonstrated that neither societal belief has any validity.

St. Xavier's Boys' College
The Good Shepherd School in Mannar owes its origins to St. Francis Xavier, who sent his missionary priests to Sri Lanka to spread the faith. In 1542, these missionaries arrived in Mannar and established a school to educate children in their native language while instilling faith in them. In 1845, when Jaffna became one of the first two dioceses of Ceylon, Catholic education gained significant importance under the guidance of Bishop Bonjean OMI, who was known as the Champion of Catholic Education in Sri Lanka. Many schools were founded during this time, including the Good Shepherd School in Mannar. In 1870, under the guidance of Bishop Bonjean OMI, Rev. Fr. Peter Maria Boutin OMI, a model religious and exemplary French missionary, came to Mannar to provide a sound English education alongside the vernacular language. The school he founded was named the Good Shepherd School. The missionaries recognized the importance of education in the development of the Church in Sri Lanka, particularly in a growing town like Mannar. As a result, they appointed a dedicated missionary to promote education in the area through the newly established school. In 1894, the Brothers of St. Joseph took over the administration of the school, headed by Brother Felix, and continued to run it through ups and downs until 1907. In 1911, the OMI priests relocated the school to its present location near the Parish House of St. Mary's Church, renaming it St. Xavier's School. We express our gratitude to the almighty God for His continuous guidance and the numerous blessings bestowed upon our beloved college. We always seek the intercession of St. Francis Xavier and the guidance of St. John Baptist De La Salle.
