Khama Rhino Sanctuary Trust
We are a community based conservation hub and game lodge situated about 30km from Serowe enroute to Maun. The main aim of the Sanctuary was to assist in saving the vanishing rhinoceros, restore an area formerly teeming with wildlife to its previous natural state and lastly to provide economic benefits to the local Botswana community through tourism and the sustainable use of natural resources. Covering approximately 8585 hectars of Kalahari Sandveld, the Sanctuary provides a prime habitat for white and black rhinos as well as over 30 animal species such as the zebra, giraffe, eland, and more than 230 species of birds. The Sanctuary's roads are regularly maintained and sign posted for easier navigation. We offer activities such as game viewing, rhino tracking tracking, giraffe tracking and nature walks. For game viewing, you have an option of using our safari vehicle, doing a self drive in your own 4 by 4 wheel drive either by yourselves or with our guide. Morning drives start at 6am and the last starts at 4pm, whilst the evening drive starts at 7pm and all these require pre-booking. Other activities are only conducted in the early morning. We also offer accommodation in forms of chalets, camping and apartments/ dorms. There are currently 6 chalets in use which are self catering and located in different areas. Each chalet has all the hotel amenities, bar fridge and braai facilities. There are 22 well laid campsites at Makongwa Camp, including sites for larger groups. the campsites are served by three communal ablution blocks. All our campsites have no power points and campers should bring their own camping gear. We have an onsite restaurant, bar, bottle store, swimming pools and a big picnic site for chillers, especially day visitors. In additional we offer conference facilities, with an open ground for team building exercises. Moreover we have an environmental education centre that hosts educational groups to teach on environmental and conservation issues.
