Hellosolar Ethiopia

HelloSolar is the first Pay-as-you-Go solar energy provider to operate in Ethiopia. HelloSolar distributes solar home systems (SHS) to Ethiopian off-grid areas and communities suffering from an unreliable grid. Powered by PowerSolar International. A wide range of SHSs are proposed, selected for their high quality and adaptability to the rural Ethiopian context. A warranty of minimum 2 years attests of the quality of the proposed systems. The systems are ranging from the simplest features of lighting and charging to larger systems with televisions and fans. Through its partnership with BelCash, HelloSolar is able to leverage a wide network of agents around Ethiopia for distribution. Through HelloCash, a USSD based mobile money service available all over Ethiopia, HelloSolar clients can easily pay for their instalments through a HelloCash agent or their personal HelloCash account. Upon full repayment, the SHS is owned by the client. HelloSolar does not only provide the SHSs at affordable prices, but offers free, full-circle customer care. Functioning on a customer centred model, a call centre and technical assistance are available for all clients. HelloSolar works with a social mission, the aim is not only to alleviate energy poverty in the third largest off grid population in the world, but mainly to provide energy based tools for social development such as connectivity and information. Operations are integrated on a comprehensive and mature platform to be able to control agents but also full customer experience. HelloSolar works together with banks and micro finance institutions in Ethiopia to penetrate the different regions of Ethiopia. Its headquarters are located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. HelloSolar is also partnering with Shell Foundation, BelCash, USAID, SMFI and Wegagen Bank.

Penda Paper Recycling

Penda was founded in 2014 by our general manager Marie Nielsen with a clear purpose in mind; to revolutionise Addis Ababa’s paper recycling industry and showcase the “power of paper”. The result was a company founded on the following three goals: 1. To build a sustainable circular economy for paper and carton waste in Ethiopia 2. To create job and income opportunities in recycling 3. To contribute to making Ethiopia a green middle-income country by 2025 After conducting a small pilot project for waste paper collection in the capital, Penda signed a Public Private Partnership agreement with the Addis Ababa City Administration in June 2015. The role of Penda under the 20-year agreement is to develop and set up a best practice system for waste paper/carton collection in the city for recycling and prevent (as far as possible) the current practice of burning and/or dumping recyclable materials at the landfill. Our accomplishment to date- 90+ fulltime jobs created - 4,500 m3 of landfill space saved - 4,300 government waste collectors are earning additional income - 170+ offices are participating in our recycling program - 512,610 children in 810 schools are educated on the benefits of recycling
