Eco Brixs
Every day across Uganda more than 600 tons of plastic is disposed, and with no formal means of waste collection, over 90% ends up being sent to landfill or burnt illegally. Eco Brixs sets out to tackle these environmental issues and create much-needed employment opportunities through its closed-loop recycling system. This system starts with local people collecting plastic waste, which they deposit to satellite collection stations in return for payment. The plastic waste is then made into a plastic sand composite to be used for pavers and other construction materials. The product has gone through extensive testing and is stronger, lighter and cheaper to produce than concrete. With 14 sites based in market and trading centres, and plans to build 20 more, Eco Brixs have made it as convenient as possible for the community to recycle and access new income streams; stimulating the local economy and encouraging people to look after their environment. Beyond its core operations, Eco Brixs also has a focus on reducing the country’s plastic consumption as a whole. They do this through an educational program that establishes Eco Clubs in schools across the Masaka District. The clubs involve interactive lessons where students learn about the dangers of plastic, and are given practical methods to aid in reducing their usage at home, as well ideas for implementing sustainable systems at school. Eco Brixs has injected over into the local economy since December 2018 alone, helping to alleviate poverty and engage the local community on environmental issues. Eco Brixs recycling sites have created a new market for plastic which is taken up by some of the most vulnerable and underrepresented community members; youth and those with disabilities. Their system has created over 500 zero-hour income opportunities and provided 12 full-time jobs. Eco Brixs have also employed 6 disabled staff who manage the community collection sites.

Green Bio Energy Ltd
Headquartered in Kampala, Uganda, Green Bio Energy Limited (GBE) is one of the first for-profit renewable energy businesses to market carbonized briquettes and improved cook stoves in East Africa. Because we are strongly convinced by the triple bottom line approach, our products, services and processes are collaboratively and innovatively designed to achieve our three goals of environmental, economic and social impact. In East Africa, expensive wood-charcoal is the fuel source used by most households, who mainly waste it in rudimentary and inefficient cookstoves. This largely participates in the ramping deforestation, increasing CO2 emissions and still widespread poverty in the region, consequences of which threaten its sustainable development. To face these challenges, GBE chose the social business model to offer low-income families access to cost-saving, eco-friendly and safe energy solutions. Under its brand Briketi™, GBE produces and distributes carbonized briquettes and improved cookstoves, based on a local content approach (local design of all products and machinery). In addition, thanks to its experienced staff now gathering expertizes in R&D, manufacturing and marketing at the BoP (Bottom of the Pyamid), GBE provides a wide range of premium business services such as training and consulting. The core values of the enterprise are Humanism, Pragmatism and Sustainability.

Micro Power
Vision To make electricity universally accessible to everyone on our planet. Mission Statement To brighten the parts of the world where electricity does not reach by providing small energy solutions to women/families all over the world. One Family – One Micro Power Executive Summary There are 1.4 billion or 20% of the world’s population that do not have access to electricity. 85% of these people live in rural areas.(International Energy Agency, 2009). Micro Power aims to enable those people without power to have access to it. Connection to a source of electricity leads to better education, a link to information, a potential new business, light to see and cook food, and a brighter future. We will initially provide a source of electricity to the people who live in rural areas of the world via the ‘Wonder Pot’. The ‘Wonder Pot’ creates electricity from fire using a special thermo-modular ceramic. Here is an example of it in action, a mother in northern Uganda cooks her beans, while doing so the pot creates electricity, enough for her to light her kitchen, charge her phone and allow her daughter to study. Micro Power will focus on the following: 1. Making the Wonder Pot available on the market where the need is greatest for it. We will initially focus on East Africa and Bangladesh. Setting up a web based donation system so that the pot can be delivered to those people whose need is greatest but don’t have the funds to buy it. Our idea based around KIVA.org system and will involve carbon offsetting. Partnerships with NGOs and local organisations to solve their electricity problems for their in-country projects. E.g. e-agriculture and e-health projects. Marketing the ‘Wonder Pot’ as a source of income, focusing on the mobile phone charging industry. We will work with local micro-finance institutions in relation to this.
