The LSIWC research themes’ priorities embrace practically all fields related to the utilization of wood and lignocellulose biomass and are based on interdisciplinary theoretical wood and lignocellulosic materials studies on the molecular and nano-level. The staff of IMCS UL consists of 200 researchers, assistants, engineers, and software developers. IMCS UL is also one of the largest Internet service providers in Latvia (SigmaNet, earlier known as LATNET). The project will identify and examine a range of cross-cutting issues in energy citizenship, which will inform iterative typology development and criteria for case selection.

The FOTONIKA-LV project aims at unlocking and boosting R&D potential for photonics in Latvia. Direct beneficiary of the project – the Association FOTONIKA-LV comprised of three institutes of the University of Latvia - Atomic Physics and Spectroscopy, Astronomy, and Geodynamics and Geodezy. FOTONIKA-LV has about 100 researchers: including 4 Professors, 28 with PhD degrees, 7 skilled technicians, 34 PhD candidates and MSc level students. Research interests span basic and applied sciences of photonics domain: optics, optoelectronics; in atmosphere and space; Earth geodesy; laser ranging and remote sensing; atomic and molecular physics; laser spectroscopy and plasma light sources; bio-photonics and medical physics. Objectives include: Development of 10 existing strategic partnerships with leading centres in Finland, Sweden, Lithuania, Germany, Spain; Exchanges of know-how through 50 secondments; Helping to reverse the “brain drain” in to a “brain-gain” by recruiting and repatriating 14 researchers to FOTONIKA-LV. from U.S, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Israel, Russia, Bulgaria. Organization of 3 large scale conferences in photonics, and summer schools in Riga; Organization of 3 strategy technology foresight workshops on RTD policy in the photonics domain; Organization of 1 large scale conference on sustainable development, knowledge society and future manufacturing; Upgrade of research infrastructure; Establishing a public-access Riga Photonics Centre, to support transfer of knowledge and technology commercialization.

Iksa Research Lab
RTU (Riga Technical University) IKSA Research Lab is a part of the IKSA CENTER (Information, communication and signal processing technology national research center) for the national project implementation. Several objects of scientific infrastructure have been created within the project, and the “RTU IKSA” Research Lab is a part of this infrastructure. Since the foundation in 2013, the “RTU IKSA” Research Lab has substantially expanded its range of activities, focusing not only on prototyping of robots, as originally intended, but also covering areas such as- Multi-robot systems - autonomy and mutual cooperation methods, mapping and automatic fusion, behavior-based operation- Sensors and sensor networks - data fusion and processing towards "smart" sensor solutions- Data analysis and development of predictive models in problem areas of big and "small" data- Research and development of solutions based on affective computing- Machine learning, including practical solutions of deep neural networks and computer vision- High-performane computing-based practical solutions- Wide application platforms of high mobility robotics- Development of electromechanical and electronic prototypes of specific equipment- IoT-based solutions and data analysis software development. Currently, the laboratory is used by experienced doctors of science, new doctors, as well as students from different levels. We have modern prototyping equipment for electronic, electromechanical, mechanical prototyping and software development, incl. for the FPGA solution development. Rtu Institute Of High-Performance Materials And Structures
Institute of High-Performance Materials and Structures (IHPMS), previously Laboratory of Experimental Mechanics of Materials (LEMM), commenced its work in January 2019, joining Institute of Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering at Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Transport and Aeronautics, Riga Technical University (RTU). Currently, IHPMS is a part of Faculty of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at RTU. The goal of IHPMS is to develop a new research direction at RTU, which is related to the development of experimental mechanics methods for innovative constructive materials. The main task of the institute is to study the operation of new multifunctional materials, composites and other innovative materials. IHPMS is equipped with advanced instruments for sample preparation, materials testing and characterization, including QATM Qpol polishing machine, Zwick/Roell universal testing machines (with max. load capacity of 150 kN and 600 kN), Messphysik non-contact video-extensometer, and the recently acquired FLIR high performance thermography and thermal imaging camera. In addition to the experimental setup, IHPMS offers expertise in computer-aided design and modeling. The current scientific research at IHPMS focuses on novel composite manufacturing techniques, multifunctional hybrid textile composites, high performance sport equipment and glass fiber composite recycling and life cycle assessment. Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, Joint Stock Company “Latvia’s State Forests” (LVM) and the Latvian Forest Industry Federation signed the founding agreement and founded the commercial company SIA “Forest and wood products research and development institute”, abbreviated as MeKA. Our Vision: MeKA’s vision is to become one of the most effective forest and wood competence centres in the Baltic States where competent and motivated employees offer services of product research, development and testing, and informal professional education. Our Mission: MeKA’s mission is to implement the integration of education, science and industry, fostering the development of forest sector to be the most competitive and dynamic, based on knowledge sectors in Latvia. Farmācijas, biomedicīnas un medicīnas tehnoloģiju Kompetences centrs (FBMTKC) aptver divus zinātniskos virzienus: • Farmācija, oriģinālzāles un ģenēriskās zāles; • Dabas vielu zāles, uztura bagātinātāji, funkcionālā kosmētika. Kompetences centra mērķis ir atbalstīt pētījumus atbilstoši definētajiem pētniecības virzieniem, attīstot jaunus produktus un tehnoloģijas nozarē un ieviešot tās ražošanā, tādējādi veicinot pētniecības un rūpniecības sektora sadarbību, kā arī nozares komersantu konkurētspējas paaugstināšanu. SIA “Meža nozares kompetences centrs” īsteno pētniecības projektu Darbības programmas “Izaugsme un nodarbinātība” 1.2.1. specifiskā atbalsta mērķa “Palielināt privātā sektora investīcijas P&A” 1.2.1.1. pasākuma “Atbalsts jaunu produktu un tehnoloģiju izstrādei kompetences centru ietvaros” ceturtās projektu iesniegumu atlases kārtas ietvaros. Pētniecības projekta nosaukums: Meža nozares kompetences centrs Projekts Nr. 1.2.1.1/18/A/004 Meža nozares kompetences centrs aptver divus zinātniskos virzienus: Meža kapitālvērtības palielināšana un mežsaimniecība. Jauni koksnes materiāli un tehnoloģijas. Kompetences centra mērķis ir atbalstīt meža nozarē aktuālus pētījumus atbilstoši definētajiem pētniecības virzieniem, attīstot jaunus produktus un tehnoloģijas nozarē un ieviešot tās ražošanā, tādējādi veicinot pētniecības un rūpniecības sektora sadarbību, kā arī nozares komersantu konkurētspējas paaugstināšanu. Projekts tiks īstenots Latvijas viedās specializācijas stratēģijas jomā – “Zināšanu ietilpīga bioekonomika”, apakšjomā – “Inovatīvi risinājumi mežsaimniecībai un kokapstrādē”.
