Myanmar Economic Forum
The "Myanmar Economic Forum" is a Yangon based "think tank" focused on all things economics related with a research interest in public policy. Operating from Yangon, Myanmar we are a platform for local and global stakeholders to meet and discuss ideas and solutions for the long term sustainable economic development and advancement of Myanmar. Our objective is to help contribute to various macro-economic policy discussions that effect Myanmar’s growth and development ranging from banking and finance to infrastructure development to foreign investment policy issues to a broad range of industry specific challenges and their potential solutions. The narrative however that has emerged in recent years amongst both the local business community and foreign investors is that of a slow pace of reform and the lack of policy clarity. The lack of any guidance to embark on any new policies to stimulate economic growth or provide focus on any one industry which can backed by timeline of policy guidelines and directives is the message emanating from most Myanmar businesses. Additionally the distressing events of Rakhine from August 2017 have cast Myanmar under a global spotlight. In this time frame Myanmar has slipped from being one of the hottest frontier markets to an avoided market. Many global investors now avoid Myanmar and some have already left. Furthermore the recently imposed targeted US sanctions that were levied under the Global Magnitsky Act will make the commercial engagement argument a higher hurdle for Western stakeholders wanting to do business in Myanmar. It is in this environment that the Myanmar Economic Forum finds itself engaging on Economic Public Policy issues with various local and global stakeholders to seek a dialogue and a way forward for a country with a population of over 50 million people straddled geographically by the two economic giants of India and China. Come join the platform … be part of the dialogue.
