The Council for Geoscience (CGS) is one of the National Science Councils of South Africa and is the legal successor of the Geological Survey of South Africa, which was formed in 1912 by the amalgamation of 3 former Surveys, the oldest of which - the Geological Commission of the Cape of Good Hope - was founded in 1895. The Council for Geoscience was established in terms of the Geoscience Act (Act No. 100 of 1993), the Act was later amended in 2010, to establish the Geoscience Amendment Act (Act No. 16 of 2010). Wits Vida Research Unit
The Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytics (VIDA) Research Unit of the University of the Witwatersrand, formerly the Respiratory and Meningeal Pathogens Research Unit (RMPRU), has over the past 24 years established itself as an internationally recognised African-led research unit in the field of epidemiology of vaccine preventable diseases, and clinical development of life-saving vaccines. Current focus areas include next generation vaccines against rotavirus and TB, as well as development of novel vaccines targeted at pregnant women to protect their young infants against the leading causes of sepsis (Group B Streptococcus vaccine) and pneumonia (Respiratory Syncytial Virus vaccine) during early infancy. Furthermore, VIDA is one of seven participating units in the multi-country Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) programme, which aims at providing refined estimates as to the causes of stillbirths and under-5 childhood deaths in low-middle income countries (LMICs). In 2020, VIDA embarked on leading the first two COVID-19 vaccine studies being undertaken on the African continent, and has undertaken multiple epidemiological and immunology studies on COVID-19 in health-care workers, adults and pregnant women. The translational research undertaken at VIDA continues to inform local and global policy recommendations on the use of life-saving vaccines in the public immunisation programmes of low-middle income countries.

Mine Health and Safety Council (MHSC) oversees research in OHS based on the sector performance as well as current and future needs. Against the commitments made by the tripartite leadership in 2011 OHS Tripartite Summit commitments the MHSC has focussed the resources to: the implementation of a culture transformation framework; the long term implementation of TB and HIV/AIDS programmes, as well as to significantly improve the quality of living conditions and working environment of mine workers and also the communities affected by mining activities. The MHSC continues to provide advice to the Minister via the submissions of advisory notes on Occupational Health and Safety issues. The MHSC has nine thrust areas ranging from: Rock Engineering, Rockbursts, Human Behaviour, Machinery & Transportation, Fires & Explosion, Physical Hazards, Airborne Pollutants, Noise and Special Projects. The adoption of appropriate best practice and necessary technologies is critical for the future of the sector. In this regard the Mine Health and Safety Council will continue to focus on the promotion of best practice, research and technology transfer.

The Centre for Affordable Housing Finance in Africa (CAHF) is a not-for-profit company with a vision for an enabled affordable housing finance system in countries throughout Africa, where governments, business, and advocates work together to provide a wide range of housing options accessible to all. CAHF’s mission is to make Africa’s housing finance markets work, with special attention on access to housing finance for the poor. We pursue this mission through the dissemination of research and market intelligence, supporting cross-sector collaborations and a market-based approach. The overall goal of our work is to see an increase of investment in affordable housing and housing finance throughout Africa: more players and better products, with a specific focus on the poor. Our work covers four main areas:(1) understanding housing markets,(2) monitoring housing sector performance,(3) exploring innovation in housing finance, and (4) supporting housing finance market development. As part of this approach, CAHF regularly undertakes and commissions research; develops market intelligence on country and regional housing markets; hosts forums, strategy discussions, and workshops; and participates in local and international conferences and debates on housing finance. Since its formation, the CAHF has come to be known as the most comprehensive and up to date source of information on housing finance in Africa.
