The Museum of Arts and Crafts (Croatian: Muzej za umjetnost i obrt) founded in Zagreb, Croatia in 1880, is dedicated to being the foremost museum of arts and crafts in this part of Europe. Drawing on the theoretical precepts of the England's Arts and Crafts movement and the intellectual postulates of Gottfried Semper, the museum was devised with the aim of creating a collection of models for master craftsmen and artist to reinvigorate the production of everyday use items. Therefore, in 1882 the Crafts School (today Applied Art and Design School) was founded along the museum. The building, constructed in by Hermann Bollé, is one of the first purpose-built edifices devised to merge the functions of the museum and the school. Stylistically, the building is a grand Historicist palace in the spirit of the German Renaissance. The museum houses more than objects spanning from 4th to 20th century. The initial holdings of the Museum had been founded several years before the museum was formally assembled. The first objects for the future museum were bought in 1875 by Izidor Kršnjavi with a donation of bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer at an inheritance auction of Catalan painter and collector Mariano Fortuny in Paris.

Nažalost smo, neki kao stalni, a neki povremeni stanovnici Biševa, svjedoci kako se posljednjih godina Biševo "muze" u komercijalne svrhe, te se polako pretvara u još jednu u nizu dnevnu destinaciju i turističku senzaciju, što odjekuje nepovratnu devastaciju. U tom procesu gubi dio svog identiteta i tradicije, njegova se povijest zaboravlja, a njegovi putevi zarastaju. Ideja za koloniju je nastala kao reakcija na ovaj proces, u želji da na otok dovedemo kreativne mlade ljude kojima ćemo prenijeti dijelić ovog znanja i pokazati im otok, a koji će zauzvrat biševski genus loci uobličiti u umjetnička djela, te s izlaganjem tih djela u uvali Mezuporat na Biševu stvoriti kulturnu ponudu u ovom turističkom žarištu. Otok se pokazao kao savršena lokacija za umjetničko stvaralaštvo, jer umjetnicima pruža izolaciju, mir, te potpuno stapanje s prirodom, kao i sa sobom i svojom vizijom. Vođeni mišlju "budi promjena koju želiš vidjeti", ovo je jedan mali pokušaj s velikom ljubavlju prema otoku, da se Biševo obogati kulturnom i kreativnom energijom koju pobuđuje u svakom pojedincu, te da se njegova ljepota na taj način podijeli sa svijetom.

It is a place of gathering for people dedicated to art and spiritual development. Earth (clay), water, fire, air, wood and metal are the subjects of our research and fascination. Basic elements that within their interaction and the interaction of the creative mind turn into art peace, weasels, sculptures and memories. The atelier organises seminars and workshops with guest artists from all over the world. Since 2006 we are working on our international ceramic centre. In a country like Croatia, culture in this underdeveloped area is not one of the first priorities. But we believe in our dream and hope there is going to be some more support from government and other organisations. The main idea is to build a place free of national, economical, racial or any other man-made differences. The only criteria are artistic development, exchange of experience and knowledge regardless of their origin, and working on a better and more spiritually conscious world.
