Winco Foods
WinCo Foods is a family of employee-owned grocery stores, with its own distribution and transportation network. The company can trace its beginnings back to 1967 when Ralph Ward and Bud Williams founded a discount warehouse grocery store in Boise, Idaho under the name of Waremart. The company operated stores under the names of Waremart Food Centers and Cub Foods until when it changed its storefront name and the corporate name to WinCo Foods, which stands for Winning Company. WinCo Foods is currently owned by its employees. In 1985, the WinCo Foods Employee Stock Ownership Trust (Employee Pension Plan), headed by then president Bill Long and with full support of store personnel and management, purchased from the Ward family a majority interest of WinCo, giving WinCo employees a real ownership stake in the company. Lowes Foods began in 1954 as a single store in North Wilkesboro, NC, and has grown to become a major supermarket chain operating in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The company grew rapidly during the 1960s,'70s and early '80s. Lowes Foods was acquired by Merchants Distributors, Inc.(MDI) in 1984 and began an aggressive expansion program in 1986, opening 19 stores over the next four years. In 1997, Lowes Foods acquired Byrds Food Stores, located in eastern North Carolina. It continued its growth in with the purchase of 13 Hannaford stores. Today Lowes Foods operates close to 100 stores and continues to open new stores throughout North and South Carolina. Lowes Foods continued to expand by opening its first Lowes Foods Fuel station in 2007. During these workshops, our new vision for Lowes Foods was born: “We bring community back to the table.” And, a number of new concepts were created including Chicken Kitchen, SausageWorks, Pick & Prep, and the Community Table. Military commissaries are government owned shopping facilities operated by the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA). DeCA commissaries look much like a commercial supermarket except they are located on military bases. Commissaries sell groceries and household goods to military service members and their families. Large commissaries include a Deli and Bakery department. These departments look much like those departments found in commercial supermarkets. Due to the special knowledge required to operate these specialty departments, commissary Deli and Bakery departments in the US are operated by commercial companies under contract with the US Government.
