The start-up ALGAEDONIA Co-founded in March 2024 by Laura LAGOURGUE and Lydiane MATTIO, the start-up is developing a macroalgae production and value chain industry in New Caledonia. Its objectives are: 1) to ensure sustainable and eco-responsible production of local macroalgae, 2) to offer environmental bioremediation solutions using macroalgae, and 3) to promote the use of the biomass produced for the local market and export. Concept & innovation ALGAEDONIA develops innovative macroalgae production tools in integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA). According to this principle, aquaculture waters (or other effluents) loaded with nutrients are used to boost macroalgae production. The macroalgae biofilter and reoxygenate the water (bioremediation), thereby improving the quality of life for the livestock. By 2027, the start-up aims to roll out its production across several aquaculture concessions (mainly shrimp farms, in partnership). The biomass will be marketed for animal nutrition (particularly aquaculture), agriculture (production of natural fertilisers) and, in smaller volumes, for the development of high value-added products for food and cosmetics.
