Hellenic Football Federation

The Hellenic Football Federation (HFF) was founded in 1926 by a decision of the three major Unions of the country: Athens, Piraeus and Thessalonica. Its foundation marked the organization of Greek football in compliance with international standards. Since then, the HFF has grown into the biggest sports federation in Greece, as football in the country is regarded as the "king of sports"[1] coming first in the preferences of sports fans. The HFF is considered a private legal entity and a non-profit organization with registered offices in Athens. It is the only exclusively qualified body[1] in Greece to represent the interests of Greek football and prohibits any political, religious or racial discrimination. In 1927, the HFF became a member of FIFA[1] and in 1954 became one of the first members of UEFA. Amongst its obligations as member of international sports bodies, the HFF accepts the statutes, regulations, directives and decisions issued by FIFA and UEFA. The HFF also has to ensure that they are accepted by all individuals and clubs in Greek football. On 3 July 2006, FIFA ruled the HFF was failing to adhere to the principles of the FIFA statutes regarding FIFA's political independence. Accordingly, the HFF was indefinitely suspended from international football. In response, Greek officials proposed a change in FIFA's law. However, FIFA ruled it too constituted an interference of the government in matters that should be under the football federation's jurisdiction. As such, FIFA concluded Greece would not be able to meet its 15 July 2006 deadline and should therefore be suspended until further notice. The suspension would have meant Greek clubs would not be allowed to participate in international competitions, and that the Greece national team would not be able to participate in international matches.[2][3] There were also doubts cast over whether the 2007 UEFA Champions League final will be played at Athens' Olympic Stadium as previously scheduled.[4] However, on 7 July 2006, the Greek government ratified a new version of the sports law,[5] granting the HFF independence and therefore adherence to FIFA's laws. FIFA announced the lifting of its ban that day, judging that the amendments adhered to FIFA and UEFA statutes. This allowed Greece to participate in UEFA Euro 2008 and also allowed Greek clubs to participate in European competitions. On 11 December 2008, HFF president Vassilis Gagatsis resigned from his position after an eight-year tenure.[6] New elections were held on 17 January 2009, making Giorgos Sarris the new president. However, Sarris' election was controversial, with reports claiming the election was not fair and that Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis had allegedly using his power to help appoint Sarris.[7][8] In April 2013, the HFF announced its new partnership with Nike, which also became the official supplier of clothes and equipment for the Greece national team. On the eve of the announcement, Giorgos Sarris praised the new partnership[9] hoping that "it will contribute to the overall advancement of domestic football".

The Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS)(Greek: Σύνδεσμος Ελληνικών Γυμναστικών Αθλητικών Σωματείων (ΣΕΓΑΣ)) is the Greek Federation of Classical Sports. It was founded in 1897 under the name SEAGS. It was founded during the reign of George I in 1897, before the beginning of the Greek-Turkish war of 1897, as a necessity for a more complete organisation of the then Greek sports clubs, following the First Olympic Games held in Athens the previous year. As the leading sporting body of 28 original clubs, SEGAS linked its history with the history of Greek sport in the modern era. Today it has 500 sports clubs and about athletes. It was the first Federation to be founded in Greece and, since its foundation and for many decades, it has cultivated all the sports (football, basketball, volleyball, swimming, tennis, fencing, cycling, gymnastics, wrestling, boxing, equestrianism, shooting, judo, handball, etc.) that subsequently acquired independent federations. It should be noted that the Cypriot gymnastics clubs belonged to SEGAS during the British rule of the island and for several years afterwards until 1983. SEGAS, along with other Greek sports federations, is administratively under the General Secretariat for Sport and is a member of the International Sports Federation. The Athens Classic Marathon The Authentic (Greek: Κλασικός ή Αυθεντικός Μαραθώνιος Αθηνών) is an annual marathon road race held in Athens, Greece, normally in early November (the second Sunday of November), since 1972. It also often serves as Greece's national marathon championships. The race attracted competitors in 2015 of which were for the 42.195 kilometre (26.2 mile) course, both numbers being an all-time record for the event. The rest of the runners competed in the concurrent 5 and 10 kilometres road races and the racewalking contest. The marathon race and course is inspired by the Ancient Greek legend of Pheidippides, a messenger who is said to have run from Marathon to Athens to bring news of the Greek victory over the Persians at the Battle of Marathon. Taking from the tradition of the Olympic Torch, the race features the Marathon Flame, which is lit at the Tomb of the Battle of Marathon and carried to the stadium in Marathon before the beginning of each race. In addition, an international marathon symposium is held the day before the race. Greek competitors have traditionally been strong in the men's and women's competitions. However, East Africans and Japanese runners have increasingly become the dominant runners from onwards. The current course records are 2:10:37 hours for men, set by Felix Kandie in 2014, while Rasa Drazdauskaitė's run of 2:31:06 in 2010 is the quickest by a woman on the course. Horc Hellenic Offshore Racing Club

HORC, the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club was founded in 1961 by a group of sailing enthusiasts who sought a venue for offshore yacht racing that would provide "that spirit of comradeship, of courtesy and chivalry, of sympathetic joy in a common sport". Today the club, with 300 members and over 60 yachts flying the HORC burgee, operates from its privately owned neoclassical clubhouse in Mikrolimano, a picturesque traditional spot in Piraeus. The club every year is organizing a number of national and international well known offshore sailing events. The history of the International Aegean Sailing Rally represents, in part, a history of the Hellenic Offshore Sailing Club. It is the oldest and most prestigious sailing regatta in Greece. Since 1964, it gathers contestants from around the world as well as top sailing teams from all over Greece. HORC is operating an Sailing Academy since 1969, with over graduates to date. Since 1987, HORC is publishing a tri-monthly journal called 'Sailing World', in approximately 4,500 copies per issue, posted free of charge to all major relative authorities, the government, sailing clubs, etc. and to all the members and subscribers. HORC has 12 branches throughout Greece.

Fc Iraklis 1908

Iraklis (Hercules in English) is a professional football club and one of the oldest athletic clubs in Greece. And the colors, blue and white, strongly reminiscent of the national colors of Greece. The story of Iraklis starts in 1899, when it was founded by the group of music lovers. The group was not an athletic club, but a club of literature and music. In 1903, the group members decided to include sports activities within the working of the club. They created and established physical fitness, swimming and cycling sections. However, it was football, the new sport of that era that ”stole the hearts” of athletes. On 22 November 1975, the club acquired Vassilis Hatzipanagis, a USSR national of Greek descent, who was late voted a Greece's Golden player for UEFA Jubilee Awards. 1976 was the year that will be engraved in the memories of all the fans of the club. On June 9, 1976, in Athens, Iraklis won against Olympiakos and won the Cup. The next day, when the players returned to Thessaloniki, over one hundred thousand fans have reserved their slot in the vast celebrations. In 1976 Iraklis participates in the European Cup Winners Cup. Iraklis has participated a total in the UEFA cup (1962, 1964, 1989, 1990, 1996, In 1985 Iraklis won the Balkan Cup, beating in the final of the Romanian team ‘Arges Pitesti’. In Iraklis managed to qualify for the first time in the second round of the tournament. After the greatest injustice Greek football has committed, Iraklis was relegated twice from the Super League (2011, 2017) and today is playing in Football Leage. In September 2018 ownership changed and Tom Papadopoulos is chairman and owner of the club.

Cycling Greece is an organization that has taken on the challenging and demanding task of reviving and organizing the Tour of Hellas. Tour of Hellas is an international cycling race that takes place in Greece. It is the most significant cycling tour in the country and it is part of the global calendar of UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale). The tour attracts professional cyclists and it is an excellent opportunity for the development of sports tourism in Greece, as many fans and spectators attend the cycling event. Additionally, it contributes to Sustainable Urban Mobility and promotes cycling culture, while also aiming to showcase and highlight the magical landscapes and the cultural heritage of Greece.
