According to GSMA Wireless Intelligence, Viettel Group is among the top 15 telecom companies globally when ranked by the number of cellular connections. The name “Met” was selected for Cambodia because it means “friend” in Khmer, and conveys our desire to build a truly Cambodian company to serve Cambodians. When Metfone launched its service nationwide in February 2009 there were seven mobile operators in Cambodia. Three ― Mobitel, Mfone and TMIC ― had been operating in Cambodia for around 10 years and were the dominant players. Mobitel (a joint venture between Cambodia’s Royal Group and international partner Millicom) led the market with a share of more than 50%. However, the market at that time was concentrated primarily in major urban centers. Most rural areas ― where 80% of Cambodia's population lives ― had no network coverage. Metfone began expanding along national roads to rural areas, expanding coverage to those who had previously been isolated. At that time, most operators used microwave transmission technology for their networks. As a result, Cambodia’s telecom infrastructure, which was already in a fragile state after decades of conflict, was limited to less than kilometers of fiber optic cable and around 1,700 base transceiver stations. Cambodia lagged the region, with a mobile penetration rate of about 20%. Moreover, due to an over reliance on developing mobile networks, fixed lines had been neglected. For years, the total number of fixed-line subscribers was almost unchanged at about Internet services, mostly dial-up, were available in some major urban centers, but the costs were among the highest in the world. The penetration rates for both fixed phone lines and the Internet were below 0.5%.

Mfone Co,Ltd Also known as “Camshin” was established in Cambodia since 1993, and it is originally a joint venture between Shin Satellite PLC, Thailand and The Ministry of Post and Telecommunication (MPTC). In the beginning, the company provided only fixed phone wireless local loop (WLL) technology, which could ensure rapid deployment of basic telephone service – hence a telephone could be installed within 24 hours of a request. On 4 March 1997, the Royal Government of Cambodia extended the company’s licence from 15 to 35 years and allowed Shinawatra International (Currently Thaicom PLC) to holding 51% and Asia Mobile holding 49% of the company’s shares. On 23 June 1997, the company was also granted the license for the provision of wireless telecommunications system and services. In 1998, Mfone was permitted to operate an 1800 Mhz cellular phone service. Later in August 2007, the company was launched with the 3G network WCDMA 2100 for phone service. The first two networks opened in Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville on 1 April 1998 Mfone is a subsidiary of Shin Satellite PLC, Thailand, which is in turn a business line of the Shin Group. Shin Group is well-known internationally for being the leading telecommunications group in Thailand. In addition, AIS (Advance Information Service) from the same telecommunication group, is the number one leading telecommunication in Thailand providing GSM mobile system. Therefore, Mfone is fully supported for continuous development by the most advanced telecommunication technology group. The GSM 1800, 900 and WCDMA 2100 from Mfone provides clearer reception, wider coverage and better value for money.
