BORN IN A TAXI (Taxi) is a multi award winning theatre company from Australia who enjoys mixing dance with humour, the profound with the profane and the familiar with the unlikely. Established in 1989, Taxi is one of Melbourne’s most highly regarded physical theatre ensembles and creators of contemporary performance. They are recognised for producing highly original, physically driven and participatory works in site specific and outdoor contexts that focus on real time co-creation. In the last ten years the company have been commissioned to create four new theatre works for young people by Arts Centre Melbourne. Immediacy, responsiveness and play are at the centre of everything they do. Taxi has maintained an ongoing inquiry into improvisation and the body’s intelligence in performance making for over 3 decades, placing impulse, the unconscious and associate mind centre stage in the making of live performance. They value and prioritise making connections to audiences of all ages and all abilities through performances, workshops and community development. Taxi’s creative directors are Carolyn Hanna and Penny Baron. Taxi’s work has been seen at World Theatre Festival Powerhouse Brisbane, Perth International Festival, Melbourne International Festival, Melbourne Commonwealth Games Cultural Festival, White Night Melbourne, Enlighten Festival Canberra, Manchester Commonwealth Games, Gwacheon Hanmadang & Goyang Lake Park (Korea), Sziget (Hungary), Oerol Festival and Theatrefestival Boulevard (Netherlands), ISTF Ghent & Chasspierre (Belgium) plus many more. The Marvellous Elephant Man has come a long way since his April 2022 debut at the humble Melbourne Jazzlab. The show's sell-out run at the 2023 Adelaide Fringe, earned 15 x reviews and won the Critics' Circle Award for 'Best Show.' Following another sell-out run at Melbourne's Chapel Off Chapel, the musical is set to headline the 650-capacity Sydney Spiegeltent in September 2023-"IF I COULD GIVE THIS SHOW TEN STARS, I WOULD” GLAM Adelaide "THE JEWEL OF THE FRINGE" Stage Whispers "A VICTORIAN F**K TON OF FUN" BEAT Magazine - The production was originally conceived, scripted and scored by three professional musicians: Jay and Sarah Nandagopan plus Marc Lucchesi. Following the show’s 2022 debut, accomplished filmmaker Chris HF Mitchell joined as Co-Director, alongside Olivier-award winning West End veteran, Guy Masterson. The show’s current cast features world-class musical talent, including Australian Opera tenors Ben Clark and Kanen Breen and Annelise Hall, who set to play Sandy in 2024’s big stage production of Grease.

This international initiative operates between San Diego, New York and Melbourne, regularly traveling to Edinburgh Fringe Festival to support emerging artists and new works. About [the director]~ Multidisciplinary artist Samantha Hafey, via "WILD TONGUES PRODUCTIONS", collaborates with local and international creatives to explore unique, creative and original works. Through her venture "WILD TONGUES" Hafey seeks to encourage collaboration in the arts, to push boundaries for artists in relation to process and she aims to keep alive the tradition of story telling and 'play', adopting the mantra "everyone has a story to tell".
