Civitas Network
We believe honest entrepreneurs are a force for good in the world. They serve their customers, pay taxes, create jobs and ultimately raise everyone’s living standard. Civitas was started to help these entrepreneurs succeed. Our model was developed from 10-years of research including of studies, 100s of interviews and years of experimentation. While doing the research we found that top venture capital companies, CEO networks and entrepreneurial communities could increase a founders odds of success by up to 100x. Excited by our findings we took the best ideas and created Civitas. The result is a low cost and time efficient way to help founders with what they need most. Practical know-how on how to grow their business and solve challenges. Warm introductions to the right people, such as, customers, investors, suppliers, etc. Ongoing nudges to help founders and CEOs level up. This has meant that many Civitas members doubled, tripled and even 5x their revenue in the first year of joining the community. Some say our focus on growth is misguided. We disagree. We believe the faster you grow, the more people you serve and the greater your contribution to the world. Our challenge to all entrepreneurs: grow faster, serve more and help build a better world.

SDI’s Strategic Plan 2023–2027 was co-created by our global network and centres the priorities of diverse slum dwellers. Guided by a holistic Theory of Change, the plan defines the impact we seek and how we will achieve it. Engage South Africa
We deeply believe in the power of youth to change our societies and shape our democracies for the better. And we believe it is time that we invest in youth leadership and active civic engagement in order to provide youth with the necessary skills, knowledge and platforms to find their voice as future leaders. Over the past decade, we have globally been witnessing a decline in the quality of democracy in many ways that has negatively affected human rights and fuelled radical ideologies and more autocratic forms of governance. At the same time, data from the International Youth Foundation’s 2017 Global Youth Wellbeing Index shows clearly that today’s youth is very concerned about social and political issues, but feels disconnected from their government and excluded from decision-making. Promoting a strong and meaningful participation of youth in democracy, as well as providing platforms for the youth’s voice to be heard is therefore more important than ever. With my.voice we provide a Leadership and Active Citizenship programme for youth in South Africa that- develops youth leadership skills - increases critical thinking skills - builds confidence through public speaking and engagement - promotes the ability to debate and dialogue effectively - increases awareness about relevant local, national and global topics - provides the understanding, knowledge and skills to participate in democracy - fosters youth’s passion and capacity to lead positive social change - connects youth across social, economic, cultural and political divides my.voice was developed by our team of education and teaching professionals from University of Oxford (UK), Windesheim University (Netherlands), University of Johannesburg and Monash South Africa in collaboration with experienced local youth facilitator. It works entirely with transformational training methodologies turning it into a life-changing and fun learning experience for all our participants.

Africa Unite
Formed in 2001 in response to violence against asylum seekers, refugees and migrants in New Cross Roads – Nyanga (Township) in Cape Town, Africa Unite, AU has broadened its reach to include youth and any other groups at risk of human rights violation. With the assistance of IDASA (the Institute for Democracy in South Africa), an initial workshop was held with 46 young adults mainly from New Crossroads- it was here that they expressed their deep frustrations about the problems facing their community. Most of these problems stemmed from the high levels of unemployment in the townships, and a sense of abandonment that prevailed among the youth. They felt that no commitment had been shown from government, at any level, to give young people in the townships confidence to face the future. In contrast, they felt refugees coming from other African countries living in their areas were successful in achieving a better quality of life, whereas they couldn’t. Although this was a misperception, it caused great resentment between local South African youth and refugees. As a first step, support was requested so that the group could begin building channels of communication and co-operation between themselves and refugees living in their area, so that a mutual and supportive relationship could develop. Our strategic objectives are: 1. To build united human rights communities by promoting social cohesion 2. To empower children and youth in Africa in order to achieve peace and stability 3. To promote self-sufficiency towards the realization of socio-economic rights 4. To build the long-term sustainability of the organization. AU achieves these objectives through: 1. Human rights peer education 2. Capacity development 3. Social dialogues 4. Advocacy 5. Psychosocial counselling 6. Cultural exchanges AU has developed two programmes in order to achieve its objectives: Human Rights for Social Cohesion and Children at risk( Singamakhalipa).

Read To Rise
A non-profit organisation that promotes youth literacy in under-resourced communities in South Africa. We hope to inspire children to read and give them access to the new, age-appropriate story books. We don't just drop off the books, rather we visit the school with volunteers and have an interactive session with each class. Sadly, many children in our communities have never owned a book before and most primary schools do not have a school library. We believe that book ownership is important in igniting a child's love for reading, so we give a new story book to each learner. We also place a Mini-Library with 50 new story books in every class. Children who love to read, will excel at school and go on to become constructive members of society. It all starts with reading. To date, we have conducted programmes in over 8,300 classes in Mitchells Plain, Soweto, and surrounds and have given out over new story books!

Ndifuna Ukwazi
Every day, people across Cape Town struggle to access land and a decent home. These struggles – from landlessness, homelessness and insecure tenure, to evictions, rising rents, gentrification and unfair rental practices – are a stark reminder not only that Cape Town inherited a broken land and housing systems from the colonial and apartheid eras, but that urban inequality is getting worse. We work to broaden access to well-located land and affordable housing. Through our campaigns, Ndifuna Ukwazi combines community organising, research, advocacy and litigation to advance urban land justice and fuel systemic change. We have successfully stopped the sale of strategically located public land, and secured commitments to build well-located affordable housing. We have defended evictees through litigation, advice, tenant education and solidarity, and ensured that people are not displaced to relocation camps on the edge of the city. We support struggles led by people most impacted by urban inequality and have built relationships of solidarity in cities around the world. We have even secured commitments to build affordable homes in private developments by promoting inclusionary housing. But more needs to be done by activists and organisations in our efforts to radically break with the past and dismantle the systems of power that hold structural inequality in place. We believe that a more just and equal city is possible – and we’re ready to fight for it.
